Erbil Governorate
Erbil Governorate (Arabic: محافظة أربيل, romanized: Muḥāfaẓat Arbīl,[5] Kurdish: پارێزگای ھەولێر ,Parêzgeha Hewlêr[6][7]), sometimes referred to by the alternative spelling Arbil Governorate, is a governorate of Iraq in Kurdistan Region. It is the capital and economic hub of the autonomous region of Kurdistan Region.[8]

Erbil Governorate covers an area of 15,074 km2 in the north of Iraq, with a population of 2,932,800 (2020) people. It is largely populated by Kurds but has minority populations of Turkmen, Arabs, and Assyrians.

Academic establishments
- Salahaddin University: Founded in 1958 in Sulaymaniya and transferred to Erbil in 1981.[11]
- Hawler Medical University: Founded in 2005.[12]
- University of Kurdistan Hewlêr: Public English-medium university.[13]
- Ishik University: Private university that belongs to Fezalar Educational Institutions in Erbil.[14]
- Cihan University: Private university, founded in 2007.[15]
- SABIS University: Private university.[16]
- Soran University, KRG-Iraq governmental university founded in 2009.[17]
