Genesis G80

The Genesis G80 (Korean: 제네시스 G80) is an executive[1] sedan manufactured by Korean luxury automaker Genesis, which is owned by Hyundai. The first-generation G80 model was originally introduced as the second-generation Hyundai Genesis model (DH) and then rebranded as the G80 in 2016 after Genesis Motor was established as a separate luxury division of Hyundai.[2]

G80 (2016–2020)

The vehicle was unveiled at the 2016 North American International Auto Show,[5] followed by the 2016 Busan Motor Show.[6] Korean models went on sale in July 2016.[7] US models went on sale in September 2016 as a 2017 model year vehicle. Early models included 3.8, 3.8 HTRAC, 5.0, and 5.0 HTRAC.[8][9][10]

The Genesis G80 was launched to the Russian market in 2017 with a 2.0-litre Theta turbocharged engine that produced 180 kW (240 hp), eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.[11] An all-new G80 debuted on March 30, 2020, and went on sale in the US in summer 2020.

G80 Sport (2017–2020)

The Genesis G80 Sport is mated with a twin-turbo 3.3-litre V6 engine producing 272 kW (365 hp), features sportier bumpers, quad-exhaust tips, staggered nineteen-inch wheels, and a mesh grille. The vehicle was unveiled at the 2016 Busan Motor Show,[12][13] followed by the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show,[14] and the 2017 North American International Auto Show.[15] US models went on sale as 2018 model year vehicles.

The first all-new model of Genesis G80, codenamed RG3, was officially revealed via an online livestream on March 30, 2020.[16] It could be considered as the third-generation model of the original Hyundai Genesis because the first-generation G80 model was initially launched as the second-generation Hyundai Genesis model (DH) and then rebranded as the G80 in 2016 after Genesis Motor became a separate luxury division of Hyundai.[17] There is a choice of three engines – a 2.5-liter gasoline turbo engine, a 3.5-liter gasoline turbo engine, or a 2.2-liter diesel engine.[18]

Unlike the previous generation, the second-generation G80 has a distinct, fastback profile that goes back to the classic sedans of the 1940s, while staying futuristic and modern at the same time. One of its main competitors, the Cadillac CT5, has also used the fastback styling.

Production

The Genesis G80 was manufactured in Ulsan, Korea. Between 2015 and 2018 worldwide sales of the G80 were 127,283.[21] Hyundai Motor America sold 6,166 units in 2016, 16,214 units in 2017, and 7,663 units in 2018 in the United States.[22] Hyundai attributes flagging US sales in 2018 to disagreements among its dealership networks that caused deliberate dwindling supplies, not on reduced consumer demand.[23] Its competitors for the midsize luxury segment include the Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Jaguar XF, and Volvo S90; and until their discontinuation, the Lexus GS, Infiniti Q70, Acura RLX and Cadillac CTS.

Marketing

During the 2017 NFL Pro Bowl, Genesis G80 sedans were awarded to offensive and defensive "most valuable players."[24]
