Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest 1974

In 1974 Greece made its debut entry in the Eurovision Song Contest. Marinella, who was already famous in Greece, sang "Krasi, Thalassa Kai T' Agori Mou" (in Greek "λίγο κρασί, λίγο θάλασσα και το αγόρι μου", meaning "a little wine, a little sea and my boyfriend").[1] The song was presented fifth out of the seventeen entries of the night and followed Norway's Anne-Karine Strøm with "The First Day of Love" while preceding Israel's Poogy with "Natati La Khayay". At the close of voting, the performance had received seven points, placing it eleventh in the field of 17.

Before Eurovision

In 1974, during the dictatorship in Greece, rock band Nostradamos won the first Eurovision participation contest ran by the state broadcaster EIRT to represent Greece at Eurovision, after broadcasting it since 1970.[2] However, due to a scandal, the band was not allowed to compete at Eurovision, and Greek laiko singer Marinella was sent instead.[2]

At Eurovision

The song was performed fifth on the night (following Norway's Anne-Karine Strøm feat. Bendik Singers with "The First Day of Love" and preceding Israel's Kaveret with "Natati La Khayay"). At the close of voting, it had received 7 points, placing 11th in a field of 17.

The contest performance was a relatively static affair, with Marinella holding a microphone as well as the backing vocalists standing in front of microphones to sing. Marinella appeared on the stage in a modern outfit of the time: wearing a striped black and white shirt (handmade creation by Menelaos Stogiannis) and black bell bottoms. She was accompanied by a four-member choir, which consisted of Mitsa Routsi, Damianos Serefoglou, Theoni Vasilaki and Stamatis Giouzelis, while on the bouzouki was her friend, Stelios Zafeiriou.[3]

As Greece didn't participated in the 1975 Contest as it was in protest of Turkey's debut and its invasion of Cyprus in 1974,[4][5] it was succeeded as Greek representative at the 1976 Contest by Mariza Koch with "Panayia Mou, Panayia Mou".

Every country had a jury of ten people. Every jury member could give one point to his or her favourite song.[6]
