Jacob Bachmeier

Jacob Bachmeier (born January 29, 1998) is a Democratic Party politician who in 2016 became the youngest person elected to public or federal office in U.S. history at the age of 18, when he was elected to the Montana House of Representatives.[1]

Biography

Bachmeier was born in 1998 to Randy and Christine Bachmeier in Havre, Montana. He has five siblings.[2] He graduated from Havre High School and currently attends Montana State University–Northern.[3]

Bachmeier announced his run for the House in November 2015, when he was a senior in high school.[4][5] He turned 18 in January 2016, making him eligible for election, and picked fellow student Daniel Almas as his campaign manager.[6]

Bachmeier was elected with 53% of the vote, defeating incumbent Republican Stephanie Hess and becoming the youngest state legislator in the United States.[6] He was reelected in 2018 with 59% of the vote. He also serves as Chair of the Hill County Democratic Central Committee.[7]

In January 2020, Bachmeier announced he would not run for a third term, but also said he may return to politics in the future.[8]

Personal life

Bachmeier resides in Havre. He is a Christian.[9] Bachmeier's great-grandfather, Charles Manuel, also served in the Legislature.[6]
