Kanni Thaai

Kanni Thaai (transl.Virgin mother) is a Tamil-language road film directed by M. A. Thirumugam, starring M. G. Ramachandran in the lead role. The film was produced by "Sandow" M.M.A.Chinnappa Devar under his Devar Films banner, released on 10 September 1965.

Plot

In a military camp, captain Saravanan (MGR) promises to his brother-in-arms, captain Moorthy, dying person (seriously wounded following an exchange enlivened against poachers on the Indian border) to take care of his girl Rani (Baby Shakila), an adorable girl, very intelligent, of 6 years.

Once, the knowledge is made between the military officer (MGR) and the girl (Baby Shakila), begins then a big trip through the country, full of pitfalls.

Because of his swiftness, the military officer Saravanan realizes that who his daughter protects is the leader of an evil group.

But they do not fall only upon ill-intentioned people, quite the opposite, Saravanan and Rani meet on their way, the beautiful Sarasou (Jayalalitha), a young woman without ties, devoid of any bad feelings, which will spare no effort, such as being mother for Rani and will devote herself as an affectionate partner for Saravanan.

Together, for the girl Râni, they are going to surmount all the numerous obstacles which wait for them on the road...

Production

Kanni Thaai was the ninth adventure of MGR under Devar Films banner, it is a road movie.

The actress P. K. Saraswathi, who plays the mother of MGR, here, was his younger sister in 1952 in ANDHAMAN KAIDHI.

A few months rather, during the same year, the actress Baby Shakila was already seen beside MGR in the legendary ENGA VEETTU PILLAI.

For the actress Baby Shakila, it was not her first Devar Films with MGR, because she had debuted in the Tamil western, the famous VETTAIKAARAN, in 1964.

Reception

The Indian Express called the story "lacklustre", its narration "mawkish" and the dialogue "gibberish".[1] T. M. Ramachandran of Sport and Pastime wrote, "The picture has its flaws and improbable and illogical sequences but director M A Thirumugam has made the film somewhat interesting with a racy treatment and with both eyes on the box-office."[2]

Songs

The music was composed by K. V. Mahadevan and all the lyrics were penned by Panju Arunachalam.[3]
