Kazakhstan was represented in the contest by the song "Forever", composed by Khamit Shangaliyev, and written by Ardak Yeleusiz[4] and Abulkhair Adam,[5] and performed by Karakat Bashanova. She achieved second place in the contest, with 152 points; 48 points behind the winner, France.

Background

Prior to the 2020 contest, Kazakhstan's highest placing in the contest was in 2019, when the song "Armanyńnan qalma" performed by Yerzhan Maksim placed 2nd with 227 points.[6]

As Khabar Agency (KA) is not an active member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the broadcaster requires a special invitation from the EBU to participate in Eurovision events.[7] Khabar was first invited to participate in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2018.[8] Channel 31 had previously expressed their ambitions to debut in the 2018 contest, and had sent a delegation to the 2017 contest.[9]

Before Junior Eurovision

Kazakhstan's participation in the 2020 contest was confirmed in June 2020, having been invited to participate by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).[10]

National final

Kazakhstan's national final took place on 26 September 2020. Twelve entries participated in the competition and the winner was selected by a 50/50 combination of votes from a jury and votes from the public.[3]

Competing entries

Artists were able to submit their entries between 10 August 2020 and 20 August 2020.[11] From 684 entries submitted, a nine-member jury panel selected 30 entries for the online semi-final.[12] The jury panel consisted of Zhenis Seidullaevich (composer), Dinara Bisembina (director of Khabar), Bagym Mukhitdenova (music producer), Kairat Baekenov (singer and composer), Erlan Bekchurin (music producer), Zhanar Dugalova (singer), Amre (singer), Dinaya (singer) and Madi Syzdykov (singer).[13][14]

On 31 August 2020, Khabar revealed the names of the composers that were directly invited to create the competing songs for the finalists. The invited composers were:[15]

  • Ali Okapov
  • Arman Duisenov
  • Baurzhan Bimakhan
  • Khamit Shangaliyev
  • Radion Ten
  • Ruslan Shernazar
  • Shyryn Bazarkulova
  • Yerbol Narimanuly

Semi-final

The semi-final took place online between 24 and 31 August 2020 for users to vote for their favorite entries on Khabar's official website. The twelve entries with the most votes proceeded to the televised national final.[3][16]

At Junior Eurovision

After the opening ceremony, which took place on 23 November 2020, it was announced that Kazakhstan will perform second on 29 November 2020, following Germany and preceding the Netherlands.[23]

Voting

The same voting system that was introduced in the 2017 edition will be used, where the results will be determined by 50% online voting and 50% jury voting.[24] Every country has a national jury that consists of three music industry professionals and two kids aged between 10 and 15 who are citizens of the country they represent. The rankings of those jurors are combined to make an overall top ten.[25]

The online voting consists of two phases. The first phase of the online voting began on 27 November 2020 when a recap of all the rehearsal performances is shown on junioreurovision.tv before the viewers can vote. After this, voters also have the option to watch longer one-minute clips from each participant's rehearsal. This first round of voting will end on Sunday 29 November at 16:59 CET. The second phase of the online voting will take place during the live show and begin right after the last performance and will be open for 15 minutes. International viewers will be able vote for a maximum of three songs.[26] They will also be able to vote for their own country's song. These votes will then be turned into points which will be determined by the percentage of votes received. For example, if a song received 20% of the votes, it received 20% of the available points.
