Kulungugu is a small town in the Upper East Region of Ghana and a minor entry point at the border of Burkina Faso and the Bawku Municipal District of Ghana.[1]

Kulungungu takes its name from a kapok tree which the founders called "gung" in the Kusasi language. This tree was near a river they called it "kul gung" in the kusaasi language and this has been corrupted to Kulungungu. Kulungugu is noted as the site of the Kulungugu Bomb Attack, a failed attempt at the assassination of Ghana's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.[2][3][4]
