Laid-Back Camp

Laid-Back Camp (Japanese: ゆるキャン△, Hepburn: Yurukyan) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Afro. Set in and around Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, the series chronicles the adventures of Rin Shima, Nadeshiko Kagamihara, and their friends as they travel to various campsites across the country.

The manga was first serialized in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Forward magazine from July 2015 to February 2019 until it was transferred to the publisher website and app for manga called Comic Fuz.[4] It has been collected in eleven tankōbon volumes. The manga is licensed in North America by Yen Press.

An anime television series adaptation by C-Station aired in Japan from January to March 2018; the anime was co-financed and licensed by Crunchyroll. A short anime, titled Heya Camp, aired from January to March 2020. A live action drama series aired in Japan from January to March 2020, and a second drama season will premiere in spring 2021.[5][6] A second anime season premiered in January 2021, and an anime film is in production. A virtual reality video game based on the series is also in development.

A twelve-episode anime television series adaptation, directed by Yoshiaki Kyōgoku and produced by C-Station, aired from January 4[23] to March 22, 2018. Jin Tanaka supervised the series' scripts and Mutsumi Sasaki designed the characters.[7] The opening theme is "Shiny Days" by Asaka, which was released as a single on January 24, 2018, while the ending theme is "Fuyubiyori" (ふゆびより) by Eri Sasaki.[24] The series was released on three Blu-ray Disc/DVD volumes between March 28 and July 25, 2018, each containing an additional OVA episode.[25] Crunchyroll co-financed, licensed and streamed the series.[26][27]

A second season, new film, and short anime were announced to be in production in October 2018.[28][29] The short anime, titled Heya Camp, aired from January 6 to March 23, 2020. The series is directed by Masato Jinbo, with Mutsumi Ito handling series composition, and Mutsumi Sasaki as character designer. Yoshiaki Kyōgoku is credited as supervisor, while C-Station is returning to produce the short anime.[30] The theme song for the short series is "The Sunshower" by Asaka.[31] A special episode was bundled with the series' Blu-ray Disc/DVD volume on May 27, 2020.[32] The second season premiered on January 7, 2021.[33][34] The opening theme song for the second season is "Seize The Day" performed by Asaka, and the ending theme song is "Next to Spring" (はるのとなり, "Haru no Tonari") performed by Eri Sasaki.[35]

A girl named Rin Shima comes to a campsite in Lake Motosu, facing opposite Mount Fuji, to spend the day camping. While setting up a campfire, Rin notices a peculiar girl sleeping by the public restroom, but thinks nothing of it. Later on in the night, Rin once again comes across the girl, Nadeshiko Kagamihara, who had gotten herself lost after just moving to a new house, and shares her curry noodles with her before they both get a clear view of Mount Fuji. After eventually managing to get her sister to pick her up, Nadeshiko leaves Rin with her phone number in the hopes of camping with her once again. A few days later, Nadeshiko begins attending her new school, which Rin also attends.

They are helped out by Rin's friend Ena Saitou, who draws Nadeshiko's attention towards the fact Rin also attends her school. Later, as Rin goes on another solo camping trip to Asagiri Plateau, Nadeshiko, having been informed about the trip by Ena, goes over with some hotpot.

Enjoying the meal, Rin apologizes for being cold towards Nadeshiko when she invited her to join the club and promises to camp again with her sometime. After spending the night in her sister's car, Nadeshiko wakes up early to watch the sunrise over Mount Fuji.

While planning for their first camping trip together, the Outdoor Activities Club experiments with cost-effective ways to make their sleeping bags more effective in cold weather before ultimately deciding to buy some sleeping bags online. Meanwhile, Rin gets her motorcycle license and goes on a solo camping trip in Nagano. As the club members hike through Fuefuki, stopping at a cafe and hot springs resort along the way, they are sent a live security camera feed of Rin on the highway.

Nadeshiko's group takes a nice relaxing dip in the hot springs, almost succumbing to the urge to eat before they reach their campsite. Meanwhile, Rin arrives at the Takabotchi Highlands and is overcome by a desire to go to a hot spring too, only to discover the nearest one has closed down. Dejected, Rin decides to climb up the peak, where she is rewarded with a lovely view, before finding a spot to cook some pasta. The club finally arrives at their campsite, where Nadeshiko makes curry for everyone. While the others are asleep, Nadeshiko goes to take a picture of the city lights to send to Rin, who goes to the summit of Mt. Takabotchi to send her a similar view in return.
6"Meat and Fall Colors and the Mystery Lake"

Rin opens a package to find a mini-grill, which she dreams of using to cook various meats while talking with Ena. Nadeshiko overhears their conversation and suggests a camping trip to try the grill. The two visit a supermarket to buy meat, but are forced to settle for substitutes as their desired items were not available. While there, they meet Aoi, who is working as a cashier, and tell her of their plans. Meanwhile, Chiaki is visiting Lake Shibire when she encounters a man grilling steak in a skillet, who offers her part of it. Rin and Nadeshiko are driven by the latter's sister to the lake.
7"A Night on the Lake Shore and Campers"

At Lake Shibire, Rin and Nadeshiko set up their tents as the latter worries about the myth of a ghost in the lake, while Rin's mother calls the man who had offered Chiaki the steak, revealing him as Rin's grandfather. Rin struggles to ignite the coals in the mini-grill, so Nadeshiko visits a nearby camp for advice. She meets a pair of siblings, one of whom is drunk; the other offers input and new coal for use. After cooking the meat, the two head back to the siblings' campground to give them plates of food as thanks, receiving jambalaya in return. That evening, Rin leaves her tent and encounters a silhouette of a beastly creature, prompting her to run off. As it turns out, the still-inebriated sister had stumbled upon their campsite.

As they work on this, Ena visits and the three talk about their new substitute teacher and camping after exams. Nadeshiko, Chiaki, and Aoi later visit an outdoor sporting goods store in Minobu, Yamanashi, where Nadeshiko declares her intention to get a job to buy a gas lantern.

Nadeshiko plans to go camping with Rin, but catches a cold the night before and has to stay at home. As such, Rin decides to go on her own to a campsite at Kamiina, and attempts to take a detour to get there, but finds out that the road is closed. After meeting some mountain climbers, she lets Nadeshiko and Chiaki decide where she goes next, and visits a temple and a hot spring before eating at a restaurant and oversleeping. Meanwhile, Chiaki visits Nadeshiko at home and cooks hōtō for her family.

Rin oversleeps and is rushing to her campsite when she encounters a roadblock. Upon being told by Chiaki that it may have been left there and never moved, she proceeds and reaches the site, where she struggles to set up due to the windy conditions. Nadeshiko, Chiaki, and Aoi plan their Christmas camping trip and invite Rin, who initially refuses before being convinced by Ena to accept. Toba, the new teacher, is unintentionally lured into becoming the Outdoor Activities Club advisor and is invited to the Christmas camp. Upon hearing Toba mention bringing beer along, Nadeshiko realizes she was the drunk sister from the Lake Shibire trip.

Chiaki and Aoi check in at the Asagiri Plateau campsite while Toba sets up her grill and starts drinking. While the two eat at a nearby restaurant, Rin prepares her tent and Nadeshiko shows up shortly after. The four purchase firewood and return to Toba's table, where she has fallen asleep as Ena and her dog Chikuwa arrive. The campers and Chikuwa spend the afternoon playing frisbee with other kids before going their separate ways. At night, Aoi cooks sukiyaki for the group. When their stove runs out of gas, Rin leaves to buy more. She remembers Ena's comments about how fun a group camping trip would be, to which she smiles.

After bathing, the campers enjoy various movies and shows on a tablet Chiaki had brought along until they decide to call it a night. Under the stars, Rin and Nadeshiko talk about their plans for the new year before going to sleep. The next morning, the two cook breakfast and watch the sunrise behind Mount Fuji. Rin returns to her job at a bookstore, while Nadeshiko continues pondering about getting one of her own to afford camping equipment. Ena texts her about a job opportunity delivering New Year's cards, which she accepts. In the epilogue, Nadeshiko returns to Lake Motosu to solo camp when she receives a message from Rin, who also happens to be doing the same. Nadeshiko proposes sending photos of their respective campsites to one another; after seeing herself in Rin's picture, she turns around and realizes they will be camping at the same location.

The two balk at the equipment's high prices so Chiaki proposes using standard gear from home, though Aoi notes her ideas are impractical or illegal. Aoi finds three metal poles and ties them together to create a tripod grill, which convinces Chiaki to improvise camping gear with other spare items in the clubroom. However, her plan falls apart when they agree it makes them look like hobos, and they settle for buying a cheap tent online.

Aoi briefly leaves before coming back, but catches Nadeshiko's suspicion as she is smaller; the real Aoi returns shortly after and reveals the doppelgänger is her younger sister Akari. When Nadeshiko notices Akari's Mount Fuji keychain, the latter and Aoi warn her of an impending war between the Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures over who has the better view of the mountain, scaring Nadeshiko. Chiaki chides Nadeshiko for her gullibility when Akari shows up dressed as Rin; although Nadeshiko successfully sees through her ploy, she falls for her older sister Sakura doing the same.

During a plane flight to Australia, turbulence causes Chiaki to panic and jump out with her friends in tow, with the five parachuting onto a deserted island. After establishing a base camp, they struggle to find food and are forced to share a cup of ramen. The next day, the five's luck increases when Chiaki discovers a wealth of bananas and Rin catches a large fish. Although they enjoy themselves, Nadeshiko and Chiaki realize they spent too much time camping on the island over trying to escape, prompting them to run to a cliff and call for help.

As they discuss Nadeshiko's Yamanashi background, the trio agree to participate in a stamp rally—an effort to visit and collect stamps at the prefecture's landmarks—to win a year's worth of Minobu steamed buns.

Until she can recover her rally sheet, Nadeshiko improvises by stamping her note pad. After collecting another stamp, the club visits a foot bath where Aoi tells supposed legends about the water and location. Although her tales attract the attention of another bather, Nadeshiko and Chiaki quickly catch on to her lies. In an attempt to emulate her, Nadeshiko tries lying in a Kansai dialect, only for Aoi to tell yet another falsehood about the dialect being popular for legends. At the Shima household, Rin's grandfather drops off the stamp rally sheet.
9"Shizunashi War II"

At a grocery store, Chiaki spots a caricature of Mount Fuji and points out the outline is based on its perspective from the Yamanashi prefecture; as a result, she proclaims it to be a "victory" for that region. The club later goes to buy tuna bowls for lunch, where Aoi notes Yamanashi is the second-largest consumer of tuna in Japan, with Shizuoka at the top. Nadeshiko is asked to pick between the two prefectures, but compares herself to Mount Fuji as she is connected to both.
10"Scary Ice Caves"

Chiaki decides to film the club during their adventures, but during a test of courage, they encounter a cult surrounding a fireplace; as it turns out, the video was a proposed horror mockumentary. The three enter the Narusawa Ice Cave, where Nadeshiko is separated from the others. Her fear amplified by the video concept, she runs out of the cave and into the forest, where she encounters Rin and receives her stamp rally sheet.
11"End of the Journey"

The club completes their stamp rally by visiting the Misato Noyu hot spring. While relaxing, Chiaki reveals the rally was actually organized in advance by her and Aoi, though Nadeshiko was already aware. Nevertheless, she comments she enjoyed the journey before asking for the year's worth of steamed buns. As they leave the hot spring, Nadeshiko suggests they go camping again.

Back at school, the club is camping when Nadeshiko asks why Chiaki and Aoi created the stamp rally, to which they explain they wanted her to visit and experience Yamanashi's landmarks that they grew up with. The next morning, Nadeshiko proclaims she had formed her own stamp rally for the club to participate, beginning with the clubroom.

Drama

A live-action television drama adaptation of the manga was announced in November 2019. Actress Haruka Fukuhara portrays Rin Shima, with Yuno Ōhara, Momoko Tanabe, Yumena Yanai, and Sara Shida respectively playing supporting characters Nadeshiko Kagamihara, Chiaki Ōgaki, Aoi Inuyama, and Ena Saitō. The drama premiered on TV Tokyo on January 9, 2020, and its first season concluded on March 26, 2020.[44] The opening theme is "Mabataki mo Sezu ni" (瞬きもせずに) by H△G, while the ending theme is "Replay" by the band Longman. A second season of the drama is scheduled for broadcast in spring 2021.[45]

Video games

Characters from the series appear alongside other Manga Time Kirara characters in the mobile RPG, Kirara Fantasia in 2018.[46][47] Also, Characters from the series appeared in collaboration with Akatsuki's mobile baseball game Cinderella Nine in 2019. [48][49] A virtual reality video game based on the series, titled Laid-Back Camp Virtual (ゆるキャン△ VIRTUAL CAMP, Yurukyan Bācharu Kyanpu), is in development by Gemdrops. The game is described as a "virtual camping adventure" and will be available in two versions, one set at Lake Motosu and another set at the Fumoto Campgrounds on Asagiri Plateau. The game is scheduled for release in winter 2021 on Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, iOS, and Android, and will support the Nintendo Labo VR Kit and PlayStation VR accessories.[50] [51]

Reception

The English release of the first three volumes of the manga were included on the American Library Association's list of 2019 Great Graphic Novels for Teens.[52] The manga was also nominated for an Eisner Award in the category "Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia" in 2019.[53]

In November 2019, Polygon named Laid-Back Camp as one of the best anime of the 2010s, describing it as "the ultimate comfy, slice-of-life anime",[54] and Crunchyroll listed it in their "Top 100 best anime of the 2010s".[55] IGN also listed Laid-Back Camp among the best anime series of the 2010s, stating that it is "a wonderful celebration of nature and friendship".[56]
