Lego Masters (American TV series)

Lego Masters (stylized as LEGO Masters) is an American reality competition television series based on the British series of the same name. Each episode features teams of two building Lego projects from a vast array of bricks and parts to meet both creative and practical goals set by the challenge for a particular episode. The show is hosted and executive produced by Will Arnett, with Lego Group creative designers Amy Corbett and Jamie Berard serving as the show's judges. Various guest stars have also served as hosts and judges.[1]

The first season aired on Fox from February 5, 2020, through April 15, 2020, as the lead-out to the third season of The Masked Singer. A second season has been greenlit to air in early 2021.[2][3]

Format

The series follows teams consisting of two Lego-building competitors, tasked with building creations out of Lego pieces based on a given theme within a given time period. After the allotted time to build, the teams demonstrate their creations to host Will Arnett and two expert judges from the Lego Group: Amy Corbett, a senior design manager at Lego, and Jamie Berard, who oversees the Lego Creator Expert and Lego Architecture lines at Lego.[4] The experts name the winning build and as well as the bottom two teams, explaining why teams were selected in this fashion. They then announce the losing team, who, save for the first week, is eliminated from the competition. In addition to this judging, Amy and Jamie provide suggestions to the teams mid-way through the build.[5] The first episode awarded the team with the best design judged by the experts with the Golden Brick, which they can use on any other challenge, after the build period but before the judging, to automatically advance to the next challenge if they do not feel confident about their work. Once they turn in the Golden Brick for immunity, it is then made available as the reward for a future challenge. The season will culminate in a finale, in which top teams compete for $100,000, a Lego Masters trophy, and the title of Lego Master.[1][6]

Production

The series is jointly produced by Endemol Shine North America, UK-based independent production company Tuesday's Child, and Plan B Entertainment.[7] All episodes were shot at Chandler Valley Center in Los Angeles.[8]

Casting for the series was announced at San Diego Comic Con 2019[9] and was described on the casting website as seeking "the most creative, passionate, and innovative Lego builder teams of 2."[10] The casting website stated that filming was to take place over seven weeks between October and December 2019.

According to Corbett, there were more than three million Lego bricks available for teams to use during the challenges.[11] Lego artist Nathan Sawaya served as a consulting producer for the show, helping to design some of the example pieces, the challenges, and the show's Lego-based trophy.[12]

On November 11, 2020, it was revealed that the series has been renewed for a second season. It is set to film in spring 2021 and begin airing later in the year.[2][3][13]

From empty plots of a larger Lego amusement park with an existing monorail system, teams are tasked to build a themed park that must include at least one automated moving attraction. Mark and Boone's moving part somehow stopped working, and Nester and Manny's stopped halfway. No team was eliminated, but Aaron and Christian won the Golden Brick, giving them immunity.

Teams must build a Lego sculpture based on extraterrestrial aliens, strong enough to support itself and be carried around, but then must be able to be easily broken apart and in a spectacular fashion when smashed by various means (dropped from a height, smashed with a bat, or exploded by a compressed air blast within it). Jessie and Kara were eliminated due to their build falling apart before the explosion. Guest starring Mayim Bialik.

Teams select one of several household objects that have been sawed in half, and must build a Lego structure extending from it that creatively builds out the missing half while integrating a story with the object. Travis and Corey were eliminated due to their build looking "incomplete".

Each team is given a movie genre and must construct a scene that demonstrates that genres. After the initial build, the teams are assigned a second genre, and must add on to their existing build to combine the two genres. Aaron and Christian gave up their Golden Brick after being told by the judges that their build lacked character. Nester and Manny were eliminated due to their build having the impression of "two different skill levels". Guest starring Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

The remaining teams must choose a vacant block from a half-completed city and build their own city blocks over it. After the initial build, the teams then create monsters to attack their city blocks.

Teams build cars in a mini-race challenge at the beginning of the episode. Teams that first or go the farthest are given more time to design and build in the main challenge. In the main challenge, teams are given two existing supports 6 feet (1.8 m) apart and must build a bridge out of Lego to be able to support the most weight as well as to be aesthetically-pleasing.

Teams construct a scene from a story filled in by children invited to the show. Following the initial build, a second page is added, and the children individually choose things to add to the story. Guest starring Nicole Byer.

Teams choose two minifigures that are later determined to be heroes or villains. They then build their heroes'/villains' lairs and are put with another team to create a battle between their characters. Guest starring Terry Crews.

In the first challenge, teams were tasked to build a Lego structure that represented a droid that fit into the Star Wars universe with some form of motorized action. In the second challenge, teams had to reconstruct an iconic scene from the Star Wars films. The three chosen scenes were: the attack on ice planet Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back, the fight on the forest moon of Endor in Return of the Jedi, and defending the base on Crait in The Last Jedi. Teams selected their scenes based on their rankings from the first challenge. Featured appearances of C-3PO, R2-D2, and BB-8.
