Mamunul Haque

Allama Mamunul Haque (Bengali: মামুনুল হক) (born November 1973) is a Bangladeshi Deobandi Islamic scholar, professor, politician, economist, academician, writer, editor, international Islamic speaker and social reformer. He is the Joint Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, Secretary General of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, Shaykh al-Hadith of Jamia Rahmania Arabia Dhaka, Founder of Babri Mosque Bangladesh, Editor-in-Chief of Monthly Rahmani Paigam, President of Bangladesh Khelafat Youth Majlish and Khatib at Baitul Mamur Jame Mosque. He was a professor of economics at Asian University of Bangladesh. He is also a leading figure in several organizations, including Rabetatul Waizin Bangladesh, an organization of Islamic speakers in Bangladesh. He has skills in five languages including Bengali, English and Arabic. He is well-known all over the country as an Islamic leader. He is particularly popular with the hard-line speaks against atheists, secularists, anti-islamist and was arrested for leading the movement in this regard. 65 organizations including Bangladesh Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League have started a massive movement across the country demanding banning, arrest and exemplary punishment of him for promoting Islamic fundamentalism.[1][2][3]

Name and lineage

Mamunul Haque was born on November 1973 in Azimpur, Dhaka.[4] His father is Azizul Haque, founder of the Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish and first Bangali translator of Sahih al-Bukhari, who was well-known as ‘Shaykh al-Hadith’.[5][6] He has 13 brothers and sisters. Mahfuzul Haque is his eldest brother, a prominent Islamic scholar in Bangladesh.[7]

Education

In his early life, he started studying with his father Azizul Haque. In 1985, at the age of 12, he had memorized the Quran at Lalbagh Chantara Jame Mosque Madrasa. In 1986, he was admitted to Jamia Rahmania Arabia Dhaka. In 1993, he got first position in higher secondary class in the central examination under Befaqul Madarisil Arabia Bangladesh from Jamia Rahmania Arabia Dhaka, third position in Honors class (Meshkat Jamaat) in 1995 and first position in Masters in Hadith (Daura-e-Hadith) in 1996. He also completed Honours and Masters in Economics from Asian University of Bangladesh.[4]

Career

He taught at Sirajganj Jamia Nizamia Bethua Madrasa for five years and at Mirpur Jamiul Uloom for two years. He has taught Sahih al-Bukhari at Jamia Rahmania Arabia Dhaka since 2000. In 2015, he founded the Mahadut Tarbiatul Islamia, a higher Islamic education, research and training institution. He was a part-time professor at the Asian University of Bangladesh. He delivers Friday sermons at the Baitul Mamur Jame Mosque, Dhaka.[4]

On 10 October 2020, he was elected Secretary General of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish[8] and on 15 November, Joint-Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh.[9]

On 29 September 2019, he was elected as an advisor to Rabetatul Waizin Bangladesh, an organization of Islamic speakers in Bangladesh.[10] In February 2020, he started the construction of Babri Mosque Bangladesh in Dhaka.[11]

Family

In family life, he is married and has three sons. His wife is Hafiza and father-in-law is a retired army officer and a member of Tablighi Jamaat.

Arrest

He was arrested by the Bangladesh government on 12 May 2013 for leading the Hefazat Movement held at Shapla Square in Dhaka on 5 and 6 May 2013.[12] During this time he wrote a book, Speaking From Prison, which was published in September of that year.[13]

Criticism

On 6 April 2019, The Bangladesh government declared him an aggressive speaker.[14]

In 13 November 2020, he requested Bangladesh government to remove the upcoming big statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, saying that it is contradictory with Islam to establishing statues of the leaders.[15] In 19 November 2020, he clarified that, he doesn't disrespect Mujib, but only requesting not to make the statue of Mujib which is prohibited in Islam.[16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32]

He has published ten books and edited four. Since 2001, he has been editor of the magazine Montly Rahmani Paygame.[33][34] He also writes articles on contemporary issues in national and daily newspapers.[35]
