MasterChef Canada (season 2)

The second season of the Canadian competitive reality television series MasterChef Canada premiered on CTV on February 1, 2015 and concluded on May 24 with Portuguese Canadian concrete contractor David Jorge winning season, becoming the first West Coaster to win. Jorge, who resides on a hobby farm in the Panorama area of Surrey with his wife and two sons, also guest starred in episodes in Season 3 and Season 5, and competed in MasterChef Canada: All-Star Family Edition.[1][2] He is presently the oldest winner of MasterChef Canada.

Season chronology

After his victory, Chef David Jorge partnered up with Top Chef Canada Season 3 Matthew Stowe (from Cloverdale) to open up a steakhouse called S+L Kitchen & Bar (a steak-and-lobster seafood themed restaurant) operated by the Joseph Richard Group, with three locations open across British Columbia as of spring 2018. In the fall of 2015, Jorge signed on a contract with JRG in a partnership that involves working with Ryan Moreno, CEO of the pub/restaurant chain. The first location opened on 200th Street at 84th Avenue in Langley on January 26, 2016. A second location opened on December 23, 2016 at 200–2070 Sumas Way in the Abbotsford Village Shopping Centre. The third location opened up in South Surrey in June 2017.[3][4][5][6][7][8]

This is also the first season to feature a home cook from the West Coast (British Columbia) to compete against a home cook from the East Coast (New Brunswick) in the season finale. Additionally, Canadian Recording Artist and Citizen West Music front man Cody Karey (from Vancouver, B.C.) became the first contestant to be invited back into the competition after originally being eliminated, placing in the final four.

Episodes

Season 2 premiered on CTV on February 1, 2015, following its telecast of Super Bowl XLIX. The premiere was originally meant to air on February 8, 2015, but was pushed ahead to air after the game in place of Spun Out, whose second-season premiere was pulled from the slot after cast member J. P. Manoux was charged with voyeurism.[9]

After the completion of all the auditions, the top 25 home cooks were called forward into the MasterChef kitchen to fight for a spot in the Top 16. Of the 25 home cooks, 9 of them (Christopher, David, Debbie, Debra, Jennifer, Kevin, Kristen, Kwasi and Tammy) were advanced straight through, meaning the remaining 16 needed to cook again for remaining seven spots. The theme of this challenge is red and white ingredients reminiscent of the Canadian flag. During cooking, one of the chefs, Meg Tucker withdrew due to illness. After cooking, two groups of home cooks were called forward, one group consisting of Andrew, Cody, Kyle and Sabrina was advanced into the Top 16, and the other group consisting of Gav, Nikita, Robert, Nathan and Mina was eliminated. This leaves six home cooks: Deanna, Inder, Jon, Lauren, Line and Michael fighting for the final three spots. Deanna and Inder were eliminated, while Line and Michael were advanced into the Top 16. This leaves Lauren and Jon for the last spot in the Top 16. Jon became the last person to advance while Lauren was eliminated and sent home.

Mystery Box 1: This first challenge features a selection of sweet and savoury ingredients. The top three dishes were Line's, Jon's, and Kevin's. Jon was declared as the winner of the mystery box.

Elimination Test 1: Jon was granted immunity and had a choice of Asian dishes for the other cooks in the challenge to use. He chose the stir fry. The judges also allowed Jon to choose one other contestant to be safe from elimination and he chose David. After cooking finishes, Jon was allowed to choose another contestant to be sent to safety. He picked Jennifer. The two best dishes were Andrew's and Line's, making them team captains for the next challenge. The worst three dishes were made by Debbie, Kyle and Kwasi. Debbie was the first to be sent home, and then Kyle was the next home cook to be eliminated.

Team Challenge 1: The competitors have to cook for the cast and crew of Cirque du Soleil. Andrew was the Red Team Captain, and Line was the Blue Team captain. Andrew chose David, Kevin, Jon, Cody, Kristen and Kwasi, while Line chose Tammy, Sabrina, Debra, Christopher, Michael and Jennifer. The teams had to serve a nice and healthy buffet style meal. The Red Team was declared as the winner, sending the Blue Team to the pressure test.

Pressure Test 1: For the pressure test, the cooks are tasked to make a tourtiere. The Red Team was allowed to choose one home cook to be excused from the pressure test, and they picked Jennifer. Line is then given an option to either save herself or one of her teammates, and she chose to save herself (After she got dehydrated and was sent to a nearest hospital). Christopher was deemed to have the best tourtiere and is sent to safety, as do Sabrina and Michael, leaving Debra and Tammy to face elimination. Debra was the third home cook to be eliminated.

Mystery Box 2: Before the challenge, Line returned to the MasterChef Kitchen after last week. For this challenge, the cooks had to create a pizza from scratch. The best three dishes were David's, Jennifer's, and Cody's. Cody won the Mystery Box.

Elimination Test 2: This elimination challenge saw the return of season one winner Eric Chong. Cody was able to choose among ingredients that signifies Eric's success on his culinary journey for the upcoming challenge. Targeting David, he chose black truffles. Cody gave up his immunity from his mystery box win and chose to cook in the upcoming challenge. David's and Sabrina's were deemed to be the best two dishes. The worst three dishes belong to Cody, Kevin and Michael. Kevin was the fourth home cook to be eliminated.

Team Challenge 2: For this team challenge, this was a special three-way team challenge in a university campus, serving poutine with the last two teams going into the pressure test. David and Sabrina were team captains of the Red and Blue Team respectively. David chose Line as the Green Team captain. David chose Andrew, Christopher, Michael for the Red Team. Sabrina chose Jon, Cody, Kwasi for the Blue Team. Line chose Tammy, Kristen, Jennifer, for the Green Team. Each team had to create a dish from different proteins selected by David, with pork for Red, beef for Blue and chicken for Green. Line's Green Team emerges victorious by a margin of seven votes.

Pressure Test 2: The Red and Blue Teams had to recreate a dish of tortellini covered in a cheese sauce. Both David and Sabrina were allowed to exempt themselves or one member of their team from the pressure test. David chose to save Michael while Sabrina chose to save Jon. Christopher's was deemed to be the best dish in the pressure test, while Sabrina, Cody and Andrew had also performed good enough to be sent to safety, leaving Kwasi and David to face elimination. Kwasi was the fifth home cook to be eliminated.

Mystery Box 3: The cooks were tasked to bake a four-layered birthday cake. The judges also announced that two cooks will be the winners of the mystery box and will receive an advantage in the upcoming elimination challenge. The best four birthday cakes are Michael's, Christopher's, David's, and Andrew's. Christoper and David were declared as the joint winners of this Mystery Box.

Elimination Test 3: Both David and Christopher were safe from elimination. The judges present David and Christopher with three different "odd" culinary combinations to which they will select three home cooks for each group of ingredients. They chose Cody, Tammy, and Sabrina for bacon and chocolate; Michael, Jennifer, and Jon for salmon and licorice; and Andrew, Kristen, and Line for chorizo and grape jelly. The best two dishes are Michael's and Andrew's, making them team captains for the next team challenge. The worst three dishes belong to Kristen, Jon and Tammy. Kristen was the sixth home cook to be eliminated.

David and Line are sent to safety for having the best fruit tarts, so Andrew, Cody and Jon are left as the bottom three. Jon was then sent to safety, meaning Andrew and Cody are eliminated.

Elimination Test 8: In the Season 2 Top 4 semifinals, the final four remaining semifinalists arrived at Cave Spring Vineyard, an off-site farm and vineyard in the Niagara region of Ontario's rural countryside to cook individually for 18 farmers and the 3 judges. The semifinalist with the best dish will advance straight to the finale, while the semifinalist with the weakest dish will be eliminated and sent home. The remaining two will battle it out in the last pressure test of the season. David will be assigning the main proteins to the contestants including himself. David chooses venison for himself, and gives pickerel to Cody, rabbits to Sabrina and squab to Line. Returning to the kitchen the next morning, David was deemed to have the best dish, advancing to the finale. Despite his excellence in beautiful plating skills and flawlessly nailing the cook on his fish to perfection, Cody's unseasoned dish was deemed to be the weakest, he was eliminated and sent home once again.

Pressure Test 5: For the last spot in the finale, Line and Sabrina had to recreate three chocolate desserts in 90 minutes; dark chocolate brownie with homemade vanilla ice cream, white chocolate crème brûlée, and milk chocolate mousse with passion fruit center. The judges decided that Line wins, eliminating and sending Sabrina home.

The final two finalists will be creating a three-course meal for the judges in a head-to-head battle. For the appetizer, Line serves foie gras with lobster, while David serves tomatoes five ways with sweetbread. For the entrée, Line serves elk tenderloin in a potato forest, while David serves wild boar belly with geoduck clams. For dessert, Line serves a cheese plate with chocolate olive bread, pistachio brittle and candied apricot, while David serves lemon curd parfait with graham sponge. David is declared as the winner of MasterChef Canada season two.
