MasterChef Canada (season 5)

The fifth season of MasterChef Canada originally aired on April 3, 2018 on CTV and concluded on June 19. Filming began in September 2017 and ended in November 2017. Sherwood Park resident Beccy Stables (originally from Grimsby, UK) won the trophy, title, and $100,000 prize money.[1] At the age of 19, Stables is currently the youngest female champion in the history of MasterChef Canada, as well as the youngest contestant to appear and compete on the show. Following her victory, Stables and her family moved to Kelowna, British Columbia, to kick-start her catering career and to continue to inspire young people, like herself, to enter the kitchen and refrain from living off pizza delivery and UberEats.[2][3] Stables also guest starred in an episode of Season 6.

581"Opportunity Knocks"April 3, 2018 (2018-04-03)5011.211[7]21[7]
In the Season 5 premiere, the Top 21 home cooks across Canada (Reem Ahmed, Oyakhire Airende, Eugene Cheng, Kaegan Donnelly, Claudia Escudero, Felix Fudge, Michael Griffiths, Andy Hay, Jen Jenkins, Nikita Kaisar, Layla Kelly, Marissa Leon-John, Peter Maltais, Dawn O’Hara, Sienna Potter, Jonathan Rahim, Nadia Rehman, Mike Schroeder, Melissa Skowron, Beccy Stables and Michael Varga) were surprised by the judges showing up with coolers containing a special secret ingredient at their hometowns across the nation. In order to earn the coveted white apron, each home cook must pick one ingredient which they will use to showcase in a dish back in the MasterChef kitchen. Home cooks who under-performed in the cook will be eliminated. During cooking, Dawn and Oyakhire were tagged out and sent home while Beccy, Jonathan and Andy received the white aprons immediately after tasting, having produced the three best dishes. After some consideration from the judges, Jen, Kaegan, Marissa, Melissa, Michael G., Michael V., Nadia and Reem were also each given a white apron since their dishes were decent enough while Claudia, Nikita, Layla, Sienna and Mike were all eliminated as their dishes were substandard. This left Eugene, Felix and Peter to be given one last chance to re-earn the final white apron. They are tasked to cook a second dish using the same special ingredient, and take it in a different direction. In the end, the judges deem that Eugene (who previously overthought and over-complicated his original audition dish) has redeemed himself enough, and was then advanced into the Top 12, sending both Peter and Felix home in a double elimination.
592"How Do You Take Your Mystery Box?"April 10, 2018 (2018-04-10)5021.166[8]22[8]

Mystery Box 1: The first Mystery Box features coffee as the main ingredient. Half the cooks are tasked to make a savoury dish while the other half will make a sweet dish. Kaegan, Beccy and Michael G. produce the three best coffee-inspired dishes for tasting. Kaegan wins the Mystery Box.

Elimination Test 1: As the winner of the Mystery Box, Kaegan is immune from elimination, directly advancing to the Top 11. He also gets to choose to exempt either the "savoury" or the "sweet" cooks from the previous challenge. Targeting to eliminate Beccy, he decides to save his fellow home cooks who made savoury dishes, exempting Michael G., Eugene, Nadia, Jen and Reem, who also advance to the Top 11 and are safe from the budget-driven elimination challenge, which requires the remaining contestants to prepare a dish by purchasing ingredients from the pantry using a budget wallet (spending no more than $10) or a luxury wallet (spend at least $50). Kaegan gives the economy (budget) wallet to Melissa, Marissa, and Jonathan, and gives the luxury wallet to Michael V., Beccy and Andy. Jonathan and Michael V. produce the best two dishes, making team captains for the next off-site team challenge. Marissa and Andy have also done good enough to be made safe. Melissa and Beccy are in the bottom two. The judges deem that Beccy has done just good enough to stay, so Melissa is eliminated.
603"Building an Appetite"April 17, 2018 (2018-04-17)5031.17519

Team Challenge 1: The home cooks face their first off-site Team Challenge when they are asked to prepare a hearty meal for 101 Habitat for Humanity volunteers, who are constructing homes at a construction site. Split into two teams, they are given only two hours to create a family-style meal using cuts of chicken, with hungry volunteers casting a vote to declare their favorite. As winner of the elimination challenge, Jonathan is given the choice to pick either the protein or his team first - he chooses to pick a team member first. Michael V. chooses dark meat, leaving the white meat to Jonathan, who chooses Eugene, Marissa, Andy and Jen, forming the Red Team, while Michael V. chooses Michael G., Nadia, Reem and Kaegan, forming the Blue Team. As the last cook standing, Beccy chooses to join Jonathan's Red Team, which is the winner.

Pressure Test 1: Returning to the kitchen the next morning to face the first pressure test of the season, the judges give Michael V. (the team captain) the choice to save the most deserving member of his team, including himself. After a long deliberation, he decides to save himself. As a result, Michael G., Nadia, Kaegan, and Reem are tasked to replicate a four-layered Black Forest cake in 80 minutes with two layers of mousseline pastry cream filling and a layer of chocolate ganache filling in the middle. Nadia and Michael G. produce the two best cakes (with Nadia's cake being deemed to be the best); both safely advance forward in the competition. Reem struggles with the pressure at the start and produces a cake that is raw in the middle inside. Kaegan forgets to put sugar in his cake batter and ends up only completing a one-layer cake after he drops one layer on the ground and the two remaining layers become soggy after soaking the cakes in sugar syrup. Kaegan is eliminated.
614"Fast and Epicure-ious"April 24, 2018 (2018-04-24)504116613

Mystery Box 2: The home cooks find a large delivery cardboard box from Chefs Plate, Canada's #1 meal kit service, which contains a large variety of ingredients, including sauce, syrup, fruits, dairy products, meat and vegetables. The cooks are tasked to design a home-inspired dish that can be produced in just 30 minutes. The winner of the Mystery Box will receive three huge advantages. The top three dishes are Michael V.'s, Nadia's and Michael G.'s. Michael G. wins the Mystery Box.

Elimination Test 2: As the winner of the Mystery Box, Michael G. is safe from elimination and his winning dish is promotionally featured on the Chef's plate menu across Canada.[9][10] He is then given the advantage assigning three different versions of a secret ingredient (dried, canned and fresh) to the remaining home cooks. Targeting Eugene and Andy, he gives the dried ingredient to Marissa, Jonathan and Beccy; the canned ingredient to Eugene, Andy and Reem; and the fresh ingredient to Nadia, Michael V. and Jen. The secret ingredient is revealed to be mushrooms in the pantry. Eugene produces the winning dish, while Andy and Marissa produce the second and third best dish respectively; the three are assigned to be team leaders for the next team challenge. The bottom three dishes belong to Reem, Jonathan, and Nadia. Reem is eliminated.
625"Barker's Dozen"May 1, 2018 (2018-05-01)5051.02327

Team Challenge 2: The second off-site Team Challenge takes place along Toronto's lakeside off leash dog park at the dog-friendly Cherry Beach. The home cooks are given two hours to produce donuts for dog owners who frequent the park. The team with the most sales will win the challenge. Eugene chooses Michael V. and Nadia for his Red Team; Andy chooses Michael G. and Jen for his Blue Team; and Marissa chooses Beccy and Jonathan for her Green Team, who wins the challenge.

Pressure Test 2: The two losing teams will face the pressure test the next morning back at the kitchen where at least one cook will be sent home, but not all the cooks will be cooking. The winning Green team is given the advantage to decide which cooks would be saved in the Red and Blue teams. After discussion, they decide to save Andy in the Blue team and Nadia in the Red team. This leaves Michael G., Eugene, Jen and Michael V. being tasked to replicate a Russian salmon coulibiac in the upcoming pressure test. Jen produces the best dish and is the first to be sent safety. Despite his initial best efforts, Michael G.'s coulibiac has large gaps in-between his slightly under-cooked puff pastry crust and his slightly overcooked salmon, but has done well enough to advance safely forward, leaving Eugene and Michael V. on the bottom two, since they both forgot to season their salmon as they were layering, plus their pastry crust is very thick and hard. The judges decide that Michael V.'s coulibiac has more flaws than Eugene's, and he is eliminated as a result.

MasterChef Canada Redemption - Part 1 of 3: Made available online shortly after this episode was broadcast, two of the first four eliminated home cooks, Kaegan and Michael V., were featured. They were both tasked with making a dish in which the star was a trout. Kaegan was criticized for adding too much black pepper while Michael V. was criticized for overcooking his trout. Ultimately, Kaegan was declared the winner and proceeded to the final round of Redemption.
636"Vive La Pressure Test"May 8, 2018 (2018-05-08)5061.17520

Gauntlet Pressure Test 1: Like the seventh episode of the previous season, the top 8 cooks face a trio of grueling and daunting consecutive pressure tests featuring French classics as the main ingredient, that will become progressively more difficult, revealing the home cooks' skills, strengths, and weaknesses, until one home cook is sent home by the end. The cooks must battle for survival to progress to the next stage of competition. The first pressure test requires the cooks to make a classic French omelette (frying stiffly beaten egg whites and butter on a pan) in just four minutes. While the omelettes made by Jen, Nadia, Jonathan and Marissa are a complete mess, Eugene and Beccy produce the two best omelettes very close to perfection (with Eugene's omelette being deemed picture perfect), both are the first to advance safely to the Top 7. They will also be team captains in next week's off-site team challenge. Additionally, Andy and Michael G. have also made intact omelettes perfectly cooked and decent enough to safely advance to the top 7.

Gauntlet Pressure Test 2: The remaining home cooks Jen, Jonathan, Marissa and Nadia face the second consecutive Pressure Test: a butter-basted steak cooked medium rare, with just 15 minutes (2 minutes to heat up the pan, 8 minutes to sear the steak and baste it with butter, and 5 minutes to rest it). Nadia and Jen emerged as the second round winners, and are made safe.

Gauntlet Pressure Test 3: Marissa and Jonathan go head-to-head for survival in the final pressure test where they must create a stunning crème caramel finished with a caramel sugar dome in 30 minutes. Marissa produces the best replication and is made safe while Jonathan proceeds methodically but falls dangerously behind, leaving everything under the wire, compounded when he oils the inside of his ramekin and fills it with sugar syrup instead of the outside, which makes it difficult to remove the sugar syrup dome. Finally, he makes a costly mistake when flipping his pudding out from the ramekin and his pudding collapses into a messy sauce, resulting in his elimination to the shock of the other cooks.

MasterChef Canada Redemption - Part 2 of 3: Made available online shortly after this episode was broadcast, Kaegan and Jonathan faced off in the final round of Redemption. They were both tasked with making a dish based on choices, the first of these being made by Jonathan for ranking higher than Kaegan. First, Jonathan selected the duck breasts, leaving Kaegan with the wild boar chops. Then, Kaegan selected the red potatoes, leaving Jonathan with the sweet potatoes. Then, Jonathan selected the broccolini, leaving Kaegan with the Brussels sprouts. Finally, Kaegan selected the Granny Smith apples, leaving Jonathan with the sweet oranges. The two home cooks began cooking with their ingredients. Ten minutes into the challenge, Claudio revealed that he, Alvin, and Michael are looking for someone who is inventive, resourceful, and flexible. Therefore, he added a twist to the challenge by telling them to switch places with each other at once.

MasterChef Canada Redemption - Part 3 of 3: Also made available online shortly after this episode was broadcast, Kaegan and Jonathan continued their face-off from MasterChef Canada Redemption - Part 2 of 3. In the end, Kaegan was praised for cooking another duck breast as an insurance policy (though he ultimately chose to plate Jonathan's original duck breast), but was criticized for having a little blood on the plate from the protein. Meanwhile, Jonathan was praised for having a flawless dish, but was criticized for forgetting to plate the potato chips that he had made out of Kaegan's red potatoes. Claudio then announced to the two that the winner will be revealed in the seventh episode (such episode consisting of a Team Challenge followed by a Pressure Test).
647"The Magnificent Seven"May 15, 2018 (2018-05-15)5071.16217

Team Challenge 3: The Top 7 home cooks gathered for a Team Challenge in Kleinburg, Ont., at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, home to the iconic Group of Seven. They are tasked to create a three-course tasting menu inspired by the Group of Seven art themes (land, sea and sky) for seven esteemed recipients of the Order of Canada. Eugene chose Andy and Michael G. for his Red Team, while Beccy chose Marissa and Jen for her Blue Team. Nadia originally wanted to join Beccy's Blue Team but was ordered by Claudio to join Eugene's Red Team before announcing the winner of the MasterChef Canada: Redemption challenge. To the cooks' surprise, Kaegan returns as the last member of the Blue Team after emerging as the MASTERCHEF CANADA: REDEMPTION winner after beating Michael V. and Jonathan. In the end, the Red Team was declared as the winner for their creative menu. To their advantage, the Red Team (Andy, Michael G., Eugene and Nadia) safely advance to the Top 7 once again, this time, safe from pressure tests.

Pressure Test 3: The losing Blue Team faces the pressure test where at least one cook will be sent home. The home cooks were tasked to replicate oysters prepared three different ways. The first was a Japanese-inspired sake poached oyster with Asian pear slaw and a perfectly poached lobster claw. The second was a raw oyster topped with mignonette sauce, champagne jelly, and red tobiko, and the third was an oyster Rockefeller with béchamel spinach purée, sautéed oyster mushrooms with panko breadcrumbs. In a twist, the judges announced that the pressure test would begin with an impromptu oyster shucking challenge where one cook who shucks the most perfect oysters in 3 minutes would be made safe. Taking quality into account, Marissa was the first to be made safe, leaving Beccy, Kaegan and Jen to face the replication pressure test. Beccy produced the best replication, leaving Kaegan and Jen as the bottom two. The judges decide to save Kaegan, resulting in Jen being sent home.
658"Cooking with (Corner) Gas"May 22, 2018 (2018-05-22)5081.1877

Mystery Box 3: The voice cast of Corner Gas Animated (Brent Butt, Tara Spencer-Nairn, Lorne Cardinal and Nancy Robertson) makes a surprise guest star during the Mystery Box Challenge to inspire the home cooks with some comic relief. The theme of this Mystery Box requires the home cooks to create elevated diner food. The winner of this challenge will be safe from elimination and receives a huge advantage. The top three dishes are Nadia's, Beccy's and Andy's. Andy wins the Mystery Box.

Elimination Test 3: The remaining 6 home cooks will face the classic MasterChef tag team challenge where at least one home cook will be sent home. The cooks are tasked to recreate an Asian street food platter: steamed bao with pork belly; jellyfish salad; banh mi sandwich with chili chicken and chicken liver mousse; takoyaki; and banana fritters. Targeting Eugene and Michael G., Andy pairs Eugene with Beccy and Michael with Kaegan, leaving Marissa with Nadia. Despite Michael G.’s initial concerns on working with Kaegan, the two produce the best platter that is mostly praised by the judges for their flavors, though their banana fritters are burnt and their takoyaki balls are slightly overcooked. Beccy becomes surprisingly vocal during her cook with Eugene when he becomes flustered and unfocused, and they manage to produce a platter that is missing some components but has good enough flavours for them to be safe from elimination. During their cook, Nadia becomes increasingly frustrated with Marissa’s lack of communication. Their platter is panned as they present no banana fritters, incomplete bao, a sloppy jellyfish salad, bland and incomplete banh mi sandwich, and raw takoyaki. The judges deem Nadia to have performed just good enough to stay in this competition and slightly better than Marissa, who is sent home.
669"On the Line of Fire"May 29, 2018 (2018-05-29)5091.0857

Team Challenge 4: The Top 6 home cooks face a super-charged Restaurant Takeover Team Challenge at Claudio Aprile’s Toronto restaurant, Copetin. The teams must make two technically demanding appetizers (octopus a la planche and beef tartare) and two entrées (sea bream and lamb) to a restaurant filled with discerning dinner guests. As the winners of the tag team, Michael G. and Kaegan are team captains; Michael G. chooses Andy and Nadia for his Red Team, while Kaegan chooses Eugene and Beccy for his Blue Team. While the Red Team performs smoothly and effectively through most of the service, the Blue Team falls dangerously behind service as Kaegan is overcome with stress. He eventually relinquishes his team captain role to Beccy, allowing the blue team to catch up. The Red Team is declared as the winner.

Pressure Test 4: The losing Blue Team is tasked to bake the technically difficult macaron for survival, and they must create ten macarons of two distinct flavours that will fit perfectly into their designated box. Leaving everything down to the wire, each home cook cook has trouble packaging their macarons, the judges deem that Beccy has produced the best macarons and is the first to be made safe. Both Eugene and Kaegan are left as the bottom two, as they both have significant flaws in their macarons. The judges decide that Kaegan produced the weakest macarons and he is sent home once again, permanently.
6710"Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?"June 5, 2018 (2018-06-05)5101.2605

Mystery Box 4: As the competition tightens, the Top 5 are given the same coolers containing the same special ingredients they used in their audition dishes at the start of this season and are now required to produce another new dish that uses these ingredients in a new different direction to showcase how much they have grown during the competition. Furthermore, the judges surprise the cooks by bringing in their family members for a surprise guest visit, who will also be working alongside the home cooks during the challenge. The winner of the Mystery Box will be receiving a huge advantage for the next challenge. The best dishes are Andy's, Beccy's and Michael G.'s. Beccy wins the Mystery Box.

Elimination Test 4: Beccy does not automatically advance to the Top 3, and must partake in the following elimination challenge, which will finish with a double elimination. The challenge features the return of the four past MasterChef Canada champions: Eric Chong (season 1), David Jorge (season 2), Mary Berg (season 3) and Trevor Connie (season 4). Each previous champion guest stars in the double elimination challenge and comes with a basket full of ingredients to inspire the home cooks. Beccy's advantage is to assign the champions' baskets to the remaining home cooks, including herself. She chooses Mary's pastry baking basket and also gives the same basket to Andy. She then gives Eric's East Asian food basket to Michael G.; David's seafood basket to Nadia; and Trevor's Italian basket to Eugene. Following the hour-long cook-off, Michael G. and Andy produce the two best dishes which safely and successfully earns them the first two spots in the Top 3 semi-finals. Nadia and Eugene's flawed dishes received lukewarm reviews while Beccy was rebuked for her dish's very bitter aftertaste overpowering the pears perfectly cooked with buttermilk. In the end, the judges decide that Beccy's dish exhibits skills just good enough to earn her the last spot in the Top 3 semi-finals, sending both Eugene and Nadia home.
6811"Pop-Up Star"June 12, 2018 (2018-06-12)5111.1935

Individual challenge: In the Season 5 semi-finals, the final 3 home cooks face the first-ever Pop-Up Restaurant Challenge in the MasterChef Canada Kitchen with 30 of Canada’s top food bloggers and influencers in attendance. The cooks are tasked to create an entree that reflects one of three different restaurants with unique cuisines that have been set up for each cook. The winner of the challenge advances straight to finale. While each cook's entree has pros and cons, the judges decide that Beccy's elegantly plated dish with all elements cooked to perfection (albeit rather a tad under-seasoned) has done slightly better than Michael G. and Andy to earn the first spot in the season finale.

Pressure Test 5: Michael G. and Andy are given one last chance to earn the final spot in the finale by competing head to head in the final Pressure Test of the season. The challenge is to replicate three elevated dishes of three classic Canadian desserts: a deconstructed Nanaimo bar, a sophisticated butter tart and an updated blueberry grunt with only 75 minutes to bake and perfect all three of them. After tasting the three desserts from both men, the judges find that Michael G.'s desserts are elegantly plated but are slightly undercooked and dry, lacking full flavours, while Andy's plating is messy but has perfect cooked spot on flavours. The judges decide that Andy has earned the last spot in the finale, sending Michael G. home.
6912"Three Courses, One Crown"June 19, 2018 (2018-06-19)5121.3453
In the Season 5 finale, Beccy and Andy compete for the title. As with the previous season, they must work non-stop for three whole hours to prepare a three-course meal for the judges, spending one hour on one course. Their appetizer must be ready for pick-up after the first 1 hour, the entree after 2 hours, and dessert after 3 hours. For the appetizers, Beccy serves quail Scotch egg on a nest of potatoes and parsnips, while Andy serves Halifax lamb donair salad with Pita chips and Tahini dressing. For the entrees, Beccy delivers rabbit two ways with Jerusalem artichoke puree, while Andy cooks an elevated hodge-podge with Dungeness crab, sweetbreads, onion soubise and crab bisque. Finally, for the desserts, Beccy serves "Fallen apple" panna cotta with an apple gelee core on a soil of dried fruits and nuts, while Andy serves Newfoundland touton with malted pastry cream, brown sugar and bruleed rhubarb. In the end, the judges decide that Beccy's menu is slightly better executed and innovative, making her the youngest winner of MasterChef Canada.
