NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament bids by school and conference
This is a list of NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament bids by school (divided by their current conference affiliation). Schools whose names are listed in the last table are no longer in NCAA Division I Men's Basketball, and can no longer be included in the tournament.
The years listed are the last tournament year a school has reached a certain round of the NCAA Tournament. Because earlier tournaments took place with fewer teams, the years listed are only those in which the school advanced (or received a bye) from an earlier round. For instance, no team is judged to have reached the Elite 8 until the 1951 Tournament because the NCAA tournament started with 8 teams from 1939–50. Similarly, no team is judged to have reached the Sweet 16 until the 1953 Tournament because the tournament started with 16 or fewer teams before 1953.
Some schools have NCAA tournament appearances under previous names. For example, UTEP was known as Texas Western when it won its NCAA title in 1966.
Additional notes:
- Opening round wins count as a win in the NCAA tournament.
- Appearances by a school that has forfeited its appearances after the fact are still shown here.
- Teams listed as competing in the 2019 Tournament received an automatic or at-large bid.
- The tournament bids by conference total is based on the number of tournament appearances by current members of the conference; not on the actual number of appearances by a conference irrespective of changes in membership. While the bids by conference depicted amount is a good reflection on historic performance by the current membership, the amount does not accurately depict a conference's historical performance in the tournament.
- Final Four teams in bold.
The lists are updated through the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament, the last to be held to date. They also reflect the following changes for the 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons:
- 2019–20
- Long Island University (LIU) merged the Division I athletic program of its Brooklyn campus, known both in athletics and academics as LIU Brooklyn, with the NCAA Division II program of its Post campus. The current LIU program inherited LIU Brooklyn's Division I membership, with the athletic history of the Brooklyn campus credited to the unified LIU program.
- Merrimack joined the Northeast Conference in 2019.
- Savannah State downgraded its athletic program to Division II.
- 2020–21
- Four schools started transitions from Division II, with Bellarmine joining the ASUN Conference (formally "Atlantic Sun"), Dixie State and Tarleton State joining the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), and UC San Diego joining the Big West Conference.
- The WAC lost two members: CSU Bakersfield (aka Cal State Bakersfield) left for the Big West Conference, and Kansas City (a 2019 rebranding of the UMKC athletic program) rejoined the Summit League after a seven-year absence.
- Purdue Fort Wayne left the Summit League for the Horizon League.
- Robert Morris left the Northeast Conference for the Horizon League.
- UConn left the American Athletic Conference for the Big East Conference.
- 2020 automatic bids rewarded to the regular season champions of the conferences that did not finish by March 11, due to the coronavirus pandemic, leading to the cancellation of the 2020 tournament.
Bids by conference
Note that these figures represent the total bids received by each current member of the conference, and does not necessarily reflect the number of years that a conference was represented in the tournament. All information is current through the 2019–20 season.
