The family originated out of South Bend, Indiana and moved to Los Angeles, California in 1920, where Merle Norman would create homemade cosmetics in a makeshift laboratory in her home kitchen. She sold her products to local customers and eventually opened a studio in 1931 in Santa Monica called Merle Norman Cosmetics. By the 1940s the company was an international multi-million dollar operation.[4]

The family is most famous for its prestigious and exotic car collection which has over 250 vehicles and antique instruments.[3][5]

The family has over 250 prestigious, exotic and antique vehicles, some of which are competed in international concours d'Elegance shows.

Nethercutt Collection

The Nethercutt Collection was founded in 1971 by J.B. Nethercutt and is the 6-story collection of the family's vehicles. It has over 250 antique and prestigious vehicles including Rolls-Royces, Duesenbergs, Bentleys, Ferraris, etc.[12] The vehicles served as the transport for the Grand Marshals of the Rose Parade.[13]

The Collection has been named as one of the finest collections in the world by the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times.[3][14][15] It has also been listed as one of America's five greatest automobile museums by Autoweek magazine.[16] Nethercutt would use the collection as his secondary residence and it had a penthouse on the 6th floor, making one of the largest houses in the United States.[17]

J.B. would take dozens of cars from the Collection with family, friends, and invited guests on a parade-like cruise through the hills to a picnic at Frazier Park with catered foods from the professional chefs at the Collection. The event was one of the most exclusive items on a car lovers wish list as Autoweek magazine described it, "You can be as rich as Bill Gates or have a collection as big as that of the Sultan of Brunei, but you don’t get a personal invitation from J.B. Nethercutt himself."[18]

Concours d'Elegance

The family has competed in hundreds of Concours d'Elegance car competitions throughout North America since the 1950s, winning dozens of best of show victories.[19] Notably, the family holds the most Best of Show victories at the highly prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, winning in 1958, 1959, 1969, 1970, and 1990 and at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, winning in 2005, 2007, 2011, 2013, and 2016.[20][21][14] The family most recently won the inaugural Las Vegas Concours d'Elegance in 2019 with their Bugatti.[22]

Racing

Jack Nethercutt II raced professionally in the 1950s and 1960s, notably including a victory at the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring in his Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, finishing 1st in class and 3rd overall.[23][24] He finished 3rd in the 1960 USAC Road Racing Championship behind Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles.[25] In the mid 1960s Nethercutt would create his own custom racecar, called the "Mirage".[26]

Legacy

Merle Norman has been credited of being ahead of her time, laying out the foundations for franchises before they were properly defined.[29][30] Norman would be described as a pioneer entrepreneur and an inspiration for women of the time, with the majority of Merle Norman Cosmetics franchise studios being owned by women by 1934.[4] Her company was one of the few examples of success through the Great Depression.[30] Norman's Santa Monica estate would become a historic landmark in the city.[31]

The Nethercutt Collection has been named by the The New York Times and Los Angeles Times as one of the finest car collections in the world, including one of America's five greatest automobile museums by Autoweek.[32][33][34] Jay Leno described J.B.'s collection as a “Smithsonian-style effort on the history of transportation in America." and "the hall of fame for cars.”[14] Originally designed for the Nethercutt's secondary residence, it was tied for the 25th largest house in the United States.[17] With the cars, the family holds the most Best of Show titles at the pinnacle Pebble Beach and Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance.[20][21]

Merle Norman Stadium at the University of Southern California and the $36 million six-story Merle Norman Pavilion at the UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica are both named after Merle Norman.[35][36] The Nethercutt Emergency Center also at the Santa Monica medical center and a street in front of the Lake Of The Woods District Hospital in Kenora are named for J.B. and Dorothy Nethercutt.[37] A court at the Faith Lutheran $3.4 million tennis facility is named after Carson Richards.[11]

Business

Merle Norman founded Merle Norman Cosmetics in 1931 by opening her first studio in Santa Monica, California for $150. The company would expand to a retail chain and encompassed dozens of studio outlets across the contiguous United States, predominately of which were owned by women. Norman was a pioneer of the "Try Before You Buy" philosophy.[38][4]

In 1969, the company went public on the American Stock Exchange and sold 400,000 shares at $25.[39][4] In 1974, the family bought back all the public stock at $10 million, $55 million adjusted for inflation (2020) and the company reverted to being privately held.[39][40] By 1981 the company encompassed thousands of studios across North America, Europe, and Asia.[41]

The family owned a chemistry laboratory called Nethercutt Laboratories Inc.[42]

Philanthropy

The family has donated several million to charities, medical institutions, veterans, and churches.[43][44]

In 1985 J.B. donated $1 million to the town of Kenora, Canada for a new emergency department.[45] In 1986, the family donated several million which led to the construction of $36 million six-story Merle Norman Pavilion at the UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica. In 2007 the Nethercutt Emergency Center was opened at the hospital.[46][47] Helen Nethercutt has funded research for autism programs.[48][7]

The family is a major donator to the University of Southern California, including the Merle Norman Stadium, Uytengsu Aquatics Center, and the Spirit of Troy marching band.[49][50][51]

The Nethercutt Collection and Museum is free of charge and contains the Nethercutt Automotive Research Library, which is considered one of the greatest in the world.[52]
