Orang Kaya Besar Imas

Orang Kaya Besar Imas (commonly abbreviated as OKBI) is a small residential neighbourhood in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. It is officially a village subdivision under Berakas A, a mukim (subdistrict) of Brunei-Muara District. The postcode for Orang Kaya Besar Imas is BB4113.[2]

Name

As a village subdivision, Orang Kaya Besar Imas is officially known in Malay as Kampung Orang Kaya Besar Imas (Kampung is sometimes spelt as Kampong),[2] which literally means 'Orang Kaya Besar Imas Village'.

'Orang Kaya Besar Imas' is also the name for a primary school but it is located in Subok, a different neighbourhood of Bandar Seri Begawan.

History

Orang Kaya Besar Imas was established in 1954 as one of the areas designated by the government for some of the Kampong Ayer residents to resettle on land under the National Resettlement Programme (Malay: Rancangan Perpindahan Negara) in the 1950s.[3]

Geography

The settlement is located in the central part of Brunei-Muara District. It is one of the neighbourhoods in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. Orang Kaya Besar Imas is contiguous with the neighbourhoods of Pengiran Siraja Muda to the north, Sungai Akar to the east, Pulaie to the south, Anggerek Desa to the west and Pancha Delima to the north-west.[4]

Administration

The area is administered as village, the third- and lowest-level administrative division of Brunei. It is one of the subdivisions under Berakas 'A', a mukim or subdistrict of Brunei-Muara. Its community is administered together with Pulaie under one village head (Malay: ketua kampung). However, the office is currently vacant but nevertheless acted by Zulkifli bin Awang Ya'akub, who is also the incumbent Village Head of Anggerek Desa and Pancha Delima.[1]

Orang Kaya Besar Imas has also been part of Bandar Seri Begawan's municipal area since the expansion of the municipality's spatial jurisdiction in 2007.[5]
