Pingtung line

The Pingtung Line (Chinese: 屏東線; pinyin: Píngdōng Xiàn; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Pîn-tong Soàⁿ) is a line of the Taiwan Railway Administration West Coast line in Taiwan.

It is 61.3 km (38.1 mi) long, of which 36.1 km (22.4 mi) is double track.[2]

The section between Nanzhou and Linbian railway stations will be upgraded from a single-track railway to a double-track railway in December 2019 while the section between Chaozhou and Nanzhou, and the section between Linbian and Fangliao is expected to remain in single-track.[3]

Taiwanese government stated in 2007 that it reserved the possibility to upgrade the entire section to dual-track railway when the number of travelers through Pingtung Line reaches a certain level [4]

History

The line was completed in 1941.

It is electrified (25 kV) with two tracks from Kaohsiung to Chaozhou. Most trains start or end from Xinzuoying Station, Pingtung Station, or Chaozhou Station. Some trains continue to Fangliao Station to either terminate or travel further onwards on the South-link Line.

Electrification Works

Electrification works on the section from Chaozhou Station to Fangliao Station is under construction. A second track is being constructed on the section from Nanzhou Station to Linbian Station. The double-track section is expected to able to operate more services in the future. Construction of a second side platform at Zhen'an Station is still not complete.

The fully electrified section from Chaozhou Station and Fangliao Station is expected to be operational by the end of 2019. The first day of official operations on the fully electrified line will be 20 December 2019. The entire section is expected to be functional by December 2020 and completed entirely by March 2024.
