The municipality contains the 1,288,720 hectares (3,184,500 acres) Verde para Sempre Extractive Reserve, a sustainable use conservation unit created in 2004.[6]
The city is served by Porto de Moz Airport.

The climate is tropical monsoon (Köppen: Am), with great differences in precipitation according to the seasons.[7]
