Portugal in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006
Portugal was represented by Nonstop in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 with the song "Coisas de nada" (Meaningless things), written and composed by José Manuel Afonso & Elvis Veiguinha.

Nonstop were formed as a result of the TV show 'POPSTARS'. The group consisted of Andrea, Katia, Fatima, Liliana and Rita. Together they released their first album and had huge success with their first single Ao Limite Eu Vou and their second single Basta Um Sorriso. One of the members, Fatima, decided to leave the group after they began singing songs in English to appeal to a boader audience. In 2004 they released their second album, which contained the singles E Tudo Vai Mudar and Play-back, a cover of a Portuguese hit from the eighties.

Festival da Canção 2006
Festival da Canção 2006 was the 42nd edition of Festival da Canção, the music competition that selects Portugal's entries for the Eurovision Song Contest.
Competing entries
The format of the competition consisted of the final on 11 March 2006, which took place at the Congress Centre in Lisbon. The competition featured ten competing songs submitted by producers who RTP invited for the competition. Each producer created two songs and selected the performer for their entries. Results were determined by a jury panel appointed by RTP and votes from the public.
On 16 February 2006, RTP revealed the names of the five producers that were invited to participate. The invited producers were:[1]

Competing entries
10 entries participated in the 42nd Festival da Canção. The competing artists were announced on 16 February 2006.[2]

Final
The final took place at the Congress Centre in Lisbon on 11 March 2006, hosted by Helena Coelho, Daniel Oliveira, Isabel Angelino, Jorge Gabriel, Helena Ramos and Eládio Clímaco. In the final ten entries participated, and the winner was determined by a 50/50 combination of votes from jury members made up of music professionals and a public telephone vote. According to the competition rules, in the event of a tie for the first place, the winner was the entrant ranked highest by the jury.

At Eurovision
As Portugal did not advance to the final of the Eurovision the previous year, it had to compete in the semifinal again in 2006. The Portuguese entry was not very popular with the televoters, coming 19th out of 23 entries, failing to qualify to the Grand Final. Therefore, Portugal will have to compete in the semi-final again in ESC 2007.
