SNCF Class Z 58000
The Class Z 58000 "RER NG" (French: RER Nouvelle Génération, English: RER New Generation) is a double-deck, dual-voltage electric multiple unit trainset that is currently under construction. The trainsets are expected to operate on line D and line E of the Réseau Express Régional (RER), a hybrid suburban commuter and rapid transit system serving Paris and its Île-de-France suburbs.

The RER NG is considered to be a part of Alstom's X'Trapolis platform and is manufactured by a consortium of French manufacturer Alstom and Canadian conglomerate Bombardier. The same consortium has built several generations of double-deck trainsets used on the RER, including the Class Z 20500, Class Z 20900, MI 2N and MI 09.
History
The "RER NG" is rolling stock, part of the Alstom X'Trapolis family of trains, intended for the RER E during its western extension planned for 2022 as well as for the replacement of the Z20500s currently running on the RER D .
This material was ordered by SNCF on behalf of STIF (now Île-de-France Mobilités). There will be 5 calls for tenders, and various manufacturers responded: Alstom, Bombardier transport, CAF and Siemens.
On 6 January 2017, SNCF announced the Alstom-Bombardier consortium was awarded the contract to build the RER NG trains. The power cars are manufactured by Alstom and the mid-size cars by Bombardier. On 11 January 2017, SNCF published a press release and a press kit on the content of the contract. The contract, for an amount of 3.75 billion euros,[1] covers the supply of 255 trainsets, including a firm tranche of 1.55 billion euros for 71 trainsets which will be allocated as a priority to line D. In October 2018, Île-de-France Mobilités evokes a market of a total of 371 trainsets, including 135 for the RER D, 71 trainsets having been purchased during the firm order of January 2017. In spring and summer 2020 the first train set made test in Velim in Czech republic.[2]
Description
RER NG trainsets will have two configurations:[3]
- 130 six-car trainsets for the RER E line with two single-level cars with cabs and motors, two bi-level cars with motors, and two unpowered bi-level cars at a total length of 112 metres (367 ft).
- 125 seven-car trainsets for the RER D line with two single-level cars with cabs and motors, two bi-level cars with motors, and three unpowered bi-level cars at a total length of 130 metres (430 ft).
Framed by the 20 m long end cars comprising two doors (one with 1300 mm opening and the other with 1950 mm), the train on the RER E will include four central bi-level cars, with two doors per side. The longer version of the RER D will include an additional bi-level car.
The height of the car access platforms in relation to the track is 970 mm for the end cars and 1000 mm reduced to 990 mm for others, thanks to movable steps, for intermediate cars. The doors located just behind the driving cabs of the motor coaches are fitted with gap fillers for access for people with reduced mobility.[4]
All trains are air conditioned.[5]
The architecture of the RER NG trainsets does not use the articulated trainset with jacobs bogies, but rather a conventional architecture, each car having two bogies.
Unlike the Z 20500 and the MI 2N, the RER NG will have open-gangways allowing passengers to travel from one end of the trainset to the other, allowing more an even distribution of passengers on board, reducing crowding during peak periods.
In order to have rapid acceleration after a stop in a station, the RER NG must be able to leave a 225 m platform in 23 seconds, that is to say as fast as an MI 84, however lighter and shorter by 17 m, thanks to its 8 or 10 motor bogies. This specificity is the standard for all suburban trains in Paris since the MI 84.
The maximum top speed is 140 kilometres per hour (87 mph). During testing speeds of 160 kilometres per hour (99 mph) were reached.
The RER NG should be equipped with the NExTEO system for operating the central section of the RER E. With this system, the train will be able to travel at 120 kilometres per hour (75 mph) in the tunnels of the central section of the RER E.
