Career

Early life and career

Born in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire,[3] Cosgrove began his youth career at Everton, joining the set-up when he was ten years old.[5] However, Cosgrove was released by Everton when he was sixteen years old and signed a scholarship forms with Wigan Athletic in 2013.[6][5] Cosgrove was called up to the first team by manager Malky Mackay when he appeared as an unused substitute bench against Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup third round on 3 January 2015.[7] Cosgrove later appeared four times in the club’s first team as an unused substitute.[8] After progressing through the club's academy, it was announced on 30 March 2015 that he was among six players to be offered a professional contract by Wigan Athletic.[6][9]

Following his loan spell at Barrow and Chorley came to an end, Cosgrove was offered a new contract and signed a one–year contract with the club.[10] He made only one first team appearance for Wigan as a late substitute in the EFL Cup against Oldham Athletic in August 2016.[11] On 25 April 2017, it was announced by the club that Cosgrove would not be offered a new contract and will leave at the end of the 2016–17 season.[12]

Loan spells from Wigan Athletic

On 18 August 2015, Cosgrove gained first team experience for the first time when he was loaned out to Barrow on a one-month loan.[13] He made his debut for the club on the same day, coming on as a 84th minute substitute, in a 1–1 draw against Guiseley.[14] In a follow–up match, Cosgrove made his first start for Barrow and played the whole game, as the club lost 2–1 against Cheltenham Town.[15][5] However, he found his playing time mostly coming from the substitute bench before returning to his parent club in mid–September.[16]

On 25 November 2015, Cosgrove was loaned out to Chorley until 2 January 2016.[17] He made his debut for the club, coming on as a 69th minute substitute, in a 3–2 loss against North Ferriby United on 5 December 2015.[18] This turns out to be his only appearance for Chorley before Cosgrove returned to his parent club once again.[19]

On 29 January 2016, Cosgrove was loaned out to Nantwich Town, his third loan spell of the season.[20] He made his debut for the club, starting the match and played 70 minutes against Ilkeston two days later.[21] Cosgrove scored his first goal for Nantwich Town in a 5–1 win against Bamber Bridge on 3 March 2016.[22]

It was announced on 20 January 2017 that Cosgrove would move on loan to North Ferriby United.[23] He made his debut for the club, coming on as a second half substitute, in a 4–2 win against Southport on 21 January 2017.[24] Following this, Cosgrove found his first team place, mostly coming from the substitute bench.[25]

Carlisle United

After being released by the club, Cosgrove went on trial with Carlisle United and was featured in the club’s friendly matches.[26] His performance impressed manager Keith Curle and he signed for the club on a short–term deal until January on 1 August 2017.[27]

Cosgrove made his debut for Carlisle United against Fleetwood Town in the first round of the League Cup, coming on as a 90th minute substitute and played throughout extra time to help the club win 2–1 to advance to the next round.[28] Four days later on 12 August 2017, he made his league debut for the club, coming on as a 73rd minute substitute, in a 2–1 win against Cambridge United.[29] However, Cosgrove found his first team opportunities limited and saw his playing time, mostly coming from the substitute bench.[30] By January, he began to make four starts for Carlisle United, playing in the striker position.[31] On 5 January 2018, Cosgrove signed a contract extension with the club, keeping him until the end of the season.[32] He scored his first senior goal on 13 January 2018 in a 1–0 win against Crewe Alexandra.[33] After the match, manager Curle said he expected Cosgrove to score more goals for Carlisle United.[34] However, the club accepted a bid from Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen for the player.[35]

Aberdeen

On 31 January 2018, Cosgrove joined Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen for an undisclosed fee, signing a two–year contract.[36] Local newspaper News and Star reported the club paid £40,000 transfer fee for the player, though Evening Express has disputed this, claiming the transfer fee was £25,000.[37]

He was sent off on his debut for Aberdeen, a 2–0 defeat against Celtic on 25 February.[38] Following his return, however, Cosgrove remained on the substitute bench for the next two months.[39] His next appearance for the club came on 14 April 2018 against Motherwell in the semi–finals of the Scottish Cup and played 11 minutes, as Aberdeen lost 2–0.[40] Two weeks later on 27 April 2018, he made his first start for the club and set up a goal for Anthony O'Connor, in a 2–0 win against Hearts.[41] On the last game of the season, Cosgrove helped Aberdeen finish second place in the league after beating Celtic on 13 May 2018.[42]

Ahead of the 2018–19 season, Cosgrove was expected to step up in the first team as Aberdeen’s first choice striker following the departure of Adam Rooney.[43] He made his European debut against Burnley in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League and won a penalty, which was successfully converted by Gary Mackay-Steven, in a 1–1 draw.[44] In the return leg, however, the club lost 3–1, eliminating Aberdeen from the tournament.[45] At the start of the 2018–19 season, Cosgrove became the club's first choice striker and formed a partnership with Stevie May.[46] He then scored his first goals for Aberdeen, in a 4–1 win against St Mirren on 6 October 2018.[47] Cosgrove experienced his first final in his professional career against Celtic in the Scottish League Cup when he started the whole game, in a 1–0 loss.[48] However, Cosgrove was sent–off for a second bookable offence, in a 1–0 win against Rangers on 5 December 2018.[49] After the match, manager Derek McInnes said that the player has not been fined by the club.[50] Following a one match suspension, he scored on his return and set up a goal for Niall McGinn, in a 3–2 win against Livingston on 11 December 2018.[51] During the match, Cosgrove was controversially booked for breaking past Scott Robinson in the 63rd minute; subsequently, his booking was rescinded.[52] He followed up by scoring six goals throughout December, including a brace against Dundee and Hearts.[53] As a result, Cosgrove was awarded Scottish Premiership player of the month.[54] He also signed a contract extension until 2022 with the Dons.[55] Cosgrove then scored three goals in two matches between 23 January 2019 and 29 January 2019 against Hamilton Academical and Stenhousemuir.[56] His goal scoring form continued further when he scored five goals in three matches, including a brace against Rangers and Queen of the South.[57] Towards the end of the 2018–19 season, his goal scoring form faded, as Cosgrove scored four more goals, including a brace against Dundee on 6 April 2019.[58] By the end of the 2018–19 season, he had made forty–four appearances and scored twenty–one appearances in all competitions, a target goal that Cosgrove exceed expectations this season.[59]

At the start of the 2019–20 season, Cosgrove continued to impress for Aberdeen when he scored six goals in the club’s qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League, including a hat–trick against RoPS and Chikhura Sachkhere.[60] After the match, Cosgrove’s performance was praised by Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes.[61] He scored his first league goals of the season, in a 3–2 win against Hearts in the opcening game of the season.[62] However, he suffered a knock that saw him missed one match.[63] Cosgrove scored on his return from injury, in a 2–1 win against Dundee in the last 16 of the Scottish League Cup on 18 August 2019.[64] Later that month, he was linked in Italian media with a transfer to Lazio,[65] which was denied by Aberdeen.[66] Cosgrove then scored three goals in two matches between 21 September 2019 and 25 September 2019 against Livingston and Hearts (twice).[67] He, once again, scored two goals in two matches between 5 October 2019 and 19 October 2019 against Hibernian and Motherwell.[68] This continued further when Cosgrove scored two goals in two matches between 24 November 2019 and 30 November 2019 against St Johnstone and St Mirren.[69] This continued even further when he scored two goals in two matches between 14 December 2019 and 21 December 2019 against Hamilton Academical and Celtic.[70] During the match against Celtic, Cosgrove received a straight red card in the 69th minutes, as the club lost 2–1; coincidentally, his first red card in twenty–two months ago also came against the same team he debuted.[71] Up until his suspension, Cosgrove continued to establish himself in the first team as Aberdeen's first choice striker.[72] During the same month, Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack confirmed the club had received no offers or approaches from other clubs for Cosgrove or teammate Scott McKenna.[73] It came after when Stoke City, Middlesbrough and New York Red Bulls were interested in signing him.[74] Amid to the transfer speculation, he served a two match suspension and returned to the starting line–up against Dumbarton in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup on 18 January 2020, scoring in a 1–0 to advance to the next round.[75] Cosgrove later scored two more goals for the club in the Scottish Cup matches against Kilmarnock and St Mirren.[76] However, he suffered a back injury that saw him missed the next two matches for Aberdeen.[77] Prior to the injury, Cosgrove said his aim was to score thirty goals in the 2019–20 season.[78] But in the unexpected turn of an event, the season was interrupted and eventually as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the club went on to finish fourth place in the league, resulting in their qualification in the UEFA Europa League next season.[79]

In July 2020, Aberdeen accepted a bid from French club Guingamp for Cosgrove, but he rejected the move.[80] However, he suffered a knee injury during the club’s pre–season friendly and was sidelined between four to six weeks.[81] By October, Cosgrove made his return to full training after recovering from his knee injury.[82] He made his first appearance of the season against Celtic on 25 October 2020, coming on as a 58th minutes substitute, and set up a goal for Ryan Hedges, in a 3–3 draw.[83] This was followed up by scoring his first goal of the season, in a 2–0 win against Hibernian.[84] Following his return from an injury, Cosgrove began to alternate between the starting line–up and substitute bench for the rest of the year.[85] His goals against Kilmarnock and St Johnstone came from the substitute bench. [86] Once again, he was linked with a move to English clubs in the January transfer window.[87] On 28 January 2021, manager McInnes revealed that he accepted a £2 million bid from Birmingham City for Cosgrove.[88] Amid to the transfer speculation, manager McInnes revealed that he dropped the player ahead of the match against Livingston on 30 January 2021[89]

Birmingham City

On 31 January 2021, Cosgrove signed a three-and-a-half year contract with Championship club Birmingham City, for an undisclosed fee.[90] As part of the move, News and Star reported that Carlisle United received 20 per cent of the profit of any move from Aberdeen.[91]

Personal life

Cosgrove grew up in Cheshire and attended Knutsford High School.[92]

In August 2020 he was one of eight Aberdeen players who received a suspended three-match ban from the Scottish Football Association after they breached coronavirus-related restrictions by visiting a bar earlier in the month.[93] In the wake of the incident, the players issued an apology for their action.[94]
