Skateparks in Virginia
Skateparks in Virginia includes dozens of examples of skateparks.[1]
Skateparks are expensive: as part of a larger project, Virginia Beach in 2017 was considering a 20,000 square feet (1,900 m2) park costing $1 million, to be piggy-backed upon a much more expensive waste water management project.[2]
Virginia Beach, alone, already has three skateparks, "premier" ones according to the city.[3] Pro skateboarder Trevor Colden grew up in Virginia Beach. Regional news media reported professional skateboarder Collin Graham of Virginia Beach, a 22-yearold in July 2019, who performed in 2018 at "Mount Trashmore"[4] was to compete for his first time in the X-Games in 2019, in Minneapolis.[5] Mount Trashmore has been a center of high-level skating. It hosted a 1986 professional competition, a Vert skateboarding contest, outside of which Mike Vallely was noticed by pros and was given a start. The park was to get a "makeover" in 2018.[6]
Skateparks in the Richmond area have been Do-it-yourself affairs, some eventually benefiting from publicly funded construction.[7]
The City of Norfolk observed, in 2019, Go Skateboarding Day (an international event which started as an annual, national event in 2004).[8]
According to USA Today, one can skate "any season of the year at several indoor and outdoor parks across Virginia with a wide range of elements and levels of difficulty."[9]
