Smeldingi

The Smeldingi (German: Smeldinger, Lithuanian:Smeltingai (Smeltis, Smelte, Smiltyne (Place with much sand), Latin: Smeldingos, Polish: Smolińcy) was a northwestern Slavic or Baltic tribe mentioned in 9th-century sources.[1] They were one of four constituent tribes, along with the Linonen, Bethenici and Morizani.[2] They lived east of the Elbe river. Obotrite prince Thrasco laid waste to their capital, and Frankish prince Charles the Younger unsuccessfully campaigned against the Linonen and Smeldingi in 808.
