SEC Group activities

Collectively, the sector comprised over 60,000 companies with a total workforce of over 300,000 individuals. The SEC Group reflected the combined views of these organisations to the UK Government and the devolved administrations, and in other sector groupings such as the Strategic Forum for Construction. It was particularly active in the areas of achieving: more cost effective procurement; fair and prompt payment and protection of cash retentions; supporting excellence and innovation and the early involvement of specialist contractors in construction projects, to ensure more effective delivery.

Lift and Escalator Industry Association

The Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA) is an advisory body for the lift and escalator industry. It was formed in 1997 through the merger of two-long standing associations dating back to 1932.[1] They represent around 95% of specialist contractors in its sector.

The LEIA operates Liftex, a trade show and exhibition for the lifts and escalator industry, every three years.[2] Liftex 2019 was held on 15-16 May 2019.[3] A different exhibition with a similar name is operated by the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association.[4]

Disestablishment

After leading the SEC for more than 30 years, its chief executive Rudi Klein retired in January 2021,[5] and the SEC Group was disbanded, to be replaced by a new engineering services sector alliance with a wider focus, including sustainability, skills and building safety.[6] The new alliance, set to be launched on 10 February 2021, excluded the British Constructional Steelwork Association, but added the Building Services Research and Industry Association (BSRIA), the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Federation of Environmental Trade Associations (FETA; manufacturers of ductwork, flues, heat pumps, building controls and related building components).[7]
