- January 6: In The Simpsons episode Homer Goes to Prep School singer Tom Waits is special guest voice.[1]
February
- February 4: Japanese animation studio Science SARU is founded by director Masaaki Yuasa and producer Eunyoung Choi.[2]
- February 24: 85th Academy Awards. For the first time someone from the animation industry, Seth MacFarlane, hosts the ceremony.
- Brave by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman wins the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.[3]
- Paperman by John Kahrs wins the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.[3]
March
- March 10: The couch gag of The Simpsons episode Black Eyed, Please is animated by Bill Plympton. This is the second time he receives this honour. The episode is furthermore notable for featuring Richard Dawkins as special guest voice.[4]

- April 7: The first episode of Attack on Titan is broadcast.[5]

- May 7: 40th Annie Awards[6]
- May 12: The couch gag of The Simpsons episode The Fabulous Faker Boy is animated by the crew of Robot Chicken. In the same episode pop singer Justin Bieber is special guest voice.[7]
- May 19: In The Simpsons episode The Saga of Carl the family travels to Iceland. Rock group Sigur Rós is special guest artist.[8] The same evening another episode, Dangers on a Train airs, with Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) as special guest voice.[9]
July
- July 2: The Animation Domination High-Def block launches in the Fox Broadcasting Company.
October
- October 6: The couch gag of The Simpsons episode Treehouse of Horror XXIV is directed by Guillermo del Toro.[10]
- October: PBS Kids rebrands with new promos and bumpers and PBS Kids Go! discontinues.
November
- November 24: In the Family Guy episode Life of Brian Brian Griffin dies.[11]
December
- December 15: Due to negative fan reaction, Brian Griffin is revived in the Family Guy episode Christmas Guy.[12]
- December 18: The Hole is added to the National Film Registry.[13][14]
