2017–18 Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. season

The 2017–18 season was the 140th year in the history of English football club Wolverhampton Wanderers. The club competed in the second tier of the English football system, the English Football League Championship for a fourth consecutive year. This was the first season under new head coach Nuno Espírito Santo.

The season was a success: the club was promoted to the Premier League after a six-year absence. This was officially achieved on 14 April after third-placed Fulham failed to beat Brentford.[1][2][3] One week later the team secured the title, having led the division since late October. The tally of 99 points was the club's highest-ever in the second tier.

When Wolves's accounts covering the 2017–18 season were published on 5 March 2019, they recorded a pre-tax loss of £57.16 million, of which around £20 million was due to bonuses paid to staff and players for achieving promotion to the Premier League.[4][5] It was noted that the loss, which was more than double the loss in the previous financial year, represented a deficit of more than a £1 million per week.[6]

Football League Championship

A total of 24 teams competed in the EFL Championship in the 2017–18 season. Each team played every other team twice, once at their stadium, and once at the opposition's. Three points were awarded to teams for each win, one point per draw, and none for defeats. The provisional fixture list was released on 21 June 2017, but was subject to change in the event of matches being selected for television coverage or police concerns.[8]
