Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010

Bulgaria will change its selection format for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 - Bulgarska nacionalna televizija (BNT) will internally select the artist that will represent Bulgaria at the contest in Bærum, Norway, while the song will be selected by the Bulgarian public in a national final. BNT selected Miroslav Kostadinov to represent Bulgaria in Oslo, where he will perform one of five songs which will be specifically produced for the national final.

Before Eurovision

Artist selection

On 18 October 2010, BNT announced that they had internally selected Miro to represent Bulgaria in Oslo. Miro previously attempted to represent Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 as part of KariZma where they placed second in the national final with the song "Fool for You".[1] The selection was based on the decision of 51 composers, poets, producers, performers, music educators and members of the media, advertising agencies and professional organizations who received questionnaires in which each member presented proposals with an official letter a performer they would like to see represent Bulgaria. Miro received the most nominations with 10 votes and was therefore selected for the competition.[2] Among performers that were highly considered included Poli Genova with 7 votes and Nora Karaivanova with 3 votes. Other performers considered included Elitsa Todorova with Stoyan Yankulov who previously represented Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007, Lili Ivanova, Maria Ilieva and Slavi Trifonov.[3]

Evrovizija 2010

A national final, titled Evrovizija 2010, was organised to select Miro's song.[4] BNT opened a song submission period for songwriters to submit their songs from 30 October 2010 to 15 January 2010.[5] In addition to the public call for submissions, BNT directly invited songwriters to submit songs.[2] By the end of the deadline, Miro and the broadcaster reviewed the received submissions and selected five songs, three in Bulgarian and two in English, to advance to the national final. The competing songs were presented on 5 February 2010 during a presentation show, hosted by Dragomir Draganov and broadcast on BNT 1. Following the show, BNT opened an application period for backing vocalists and dancers for the competition with a deadline of 12 February 2010.[6][7]

The final, broadcast on BNT 1 as well as online via the broadcaster's website bnt.bg and the official Eurovision Song Contest website eurovision.tv, took place on 28 February 2010 at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia and hosted by Dragomir Draganov.[8] All five competing songs were performed by Miro and the winning song, "Angel si ti", was determined exclusively by public televoting.[9][10] In addition to the performances of the competing songs, 2008 Bulgarian Eurovision entrants Deep Zone Project performed as guests.[8]

At Eurovision

Bulgaria competed in the second semi-final, held on 27 May. They performed 13th in the running order but failed to qualify, placing 15th with 19 points.
