Czech Republic in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009

The Czech Republic competed at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009, held in Moscow, Russia. It had been rumoured that, due to two poor placings for the country in 2007 and 2008, coming last and second last, Česká televize (ČT), the Czech broadcaster would withdraw, however the broadcaster confirmed their participation at the 2009 contest.[1][2] The song did not progress from the first semi-final of the competition, finishing last once more with 0 points.

Before Eurovision

Artist selection

On 30 January 2009, Gipsy.cz was announced by ČT as the Czech entrant for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. Gipsy.cz had previously participated in the Czech 2007 and 2008 national selections but did not win.[3][4][5]

Eurosong 2009

The song that Gipsy.cz represented the Czech Republic with was selected through the national selection process Eurosong 2009. Two songs, both written by Radoslav "Gipsy" Banga, were presented during the ČT2 programme Noc s Andělem on 1 March 2009. The Czech public were able to vote via SMS until 14 March 2009 and the winning song, "Aven Romale", was announced on 15 March 2009 during the ČT Anděl Music Awards.[6]

At Eurovision

Since the Czech Republic is not one of the "Big Four" and was not the host of the 2009 contest, it competed in one of the two semi-finals. At the semi-final allocation draw on 30 January, it was decided that the country would compete in the first semi-final on 12 May 2009.[7][8][9] ČT announced it would broadcast only the first semi final and the final of the contest, not broadcasting the second semi-final.[3] Gipsy.cz performed second in the first semifinal. It got no points and placed last. "Aven Romale" is the sixteenth song getting zero points.
