Dettol

Dettol is a brand of cleaning supplies and disinfectant and antiseptic, introduced in 1932[1] and the manufacturer owned by the Anglo-Dutch company Reckitt Benckiser.[1] In Germany, it is sold under the name Sagrotan.[2]

Not to be confused with Detrol.

Dettol Antiseptic Disinfectant Liquid
Main article: Chloroxylenol

The active ingredient in Dettol that confers its antiseptic property is chloroxylenol (C8H9ClO), an aromatic chemical compound. Chloroxylenol comprises 4.8% of Dettol's total admixture, with the rest made up of pine oil, isopropanol, castor oil, soap and water.[3]

Circa 1978, "household Dettol" was reported to contain chloroxylenol (48 g/L), terpineol, and ethyl alcohol.[4]

The original Dettol liquid antiseptic and disinfectant[5] is light yellow in colour in the concentrated form but, as several of the ingredients are insoluble in water, it produces a milky emulsion of oil droplets when diluted with water, exhibiting the ouzo effect.

Other Products

Dettol Antibacterial Surface Cleanser and Dettol Antibacterial Wipes contain the active ingredient benzalkonium chloride.[6]
