Foundation

Following Golden Dawn's failure to secure any seats in the 2019 Greek legislative election,[3][4][5] many members of the party started asking for modifications in the party's structure, as well as a change in leadership. Nikos Michaloliakos, General Secretary of the party, was considered by many former deputies as responsible for the failure to reach the 3% threshold. Consequently, many prominent party members began to abandon Golden Dawn, since Michaloliakos insisted on remaining in charge of the party.[6] Noticeably, Giannis Lagos, MEP for the party since the 2019 European Parliament election in Greece, announced his departure from Golden Dawn alongside Giorgos Germenis, Nikos Kouzilos and Panagiotis Iliopoulos to found a new nationalist party called National Popular Consciousness.[7][8][9]

According to a document obtained by the leftist newspaper Efimerida ton Syntakton,[10] Golden Dawn spokesperson Ilias Kasidiaris required from Michaloliakos to withdraw from the party leadership. Specifically, Kasidiaris asked from Michaloliakos to publicly condemn fascism, Nazism and any non-Greek ideology. Golden Dawn leadership did not make any of the above actions or statements and thus, Kasidiaris announced on May 21, 2020,[11] through a YouTube video, its withdrawal from the party and the foundation of a new nationalist party under himself, named "Greeks for the Fatherland".[12][13] Kasidiaris has made clear that the new party rejects Fascism and Nazism and is ideologically close to the European nationalist movements,[14] like Lega Nord in Italy, by which it is speculated that its logo is inspired.[15]

Opinion polls

A few days after the founding of the party, its percentages began to appear in the polls, with the reduction of the number of voters (without abstention, blank and undecided) between 1.5% and 3%, which is the threshold for entering the Greek Parliament.[16][17]

Government program and goals

The party has stated ten immediate and long-term goals which are:[18]

  1. Solving the Greek demographic problem by increasing birth-rates through tax exemptions, economic help and rewarding motherhood.
  2. Putting a stop to illegal immigration by immediately deporting every illegal immigrant from Greece, termination of free accommodation and monthly subsidies for everyone who is residing in Greece illegally.
  3. Self-sufficient production of all essentials which includes but is not limited to: medicines, food, fuel and firearms.
  4. Promoting labor and entrepreneurship through the reduction of all tax rates and their assimilation with those of neighboring countries, which have absorbed thousands of Greek companies. Furthermore, proper use of public property, attracting investors through the country's geostrategic upgrades and above all priority to the Greek citizen.
  5. Upgrade of the national geostrategic doctrine which includes the declaration of Greece's exclusive economic zone, expansion of Greek territorial waters to 12 nautical miles and a common defense strategy between Greece and Cyprus.
  6. Correct exploitation of the Greek hydrocarbon deposits in its Exclusive Economic Zone.
  7. New defensive doctrine with an immediate decisive blow against any foreign intrusion. New equipment model for the Greek armed forces with dozens of launch platforms on islands and islets of the Archipelago. Unmanned aerial vehicles and submarines that will create an impenetrable wall of defence. Greek-made weapon-systems with minimal costs.
  8. Zero-tolerance policy to criminality. Special police operations to crack down on the illegal camps in the country and abolition of the favorable terms that let many dangerous criminals walk free on a daily basis.
  9. Political cleansing. Ending the theft and illegal exploitation of the public wealth by corrupt politicians and Non-Governmental Organizations.
  10. Greek education. Preservation of the eternal values of Greek education, preservation of Greek culture and traditions. Defending Christian Orthodoxy against the threat of Islamization.
