Komsomolske, Donetsk Oblast

Komsomolske (Ukrainian: Комсомольське, Russian: Комсомольское is a town in Starobesheve Raion, Donetsk Oblast (province) of Ukraine. In May 2016, the Verkhovna Rada renamed the town to Kalmiuske (Ukrainian: Кальміуське, Russian: Кальмиусское) to comply with the law prohibited the names of Communist origin. The Ukrainian government does not control the town, and the new name is not recognized locally. The population was 11,909 in 2011, down from 12,813 in 2001. Currently population is estimated as 11,469(2020 est.)[1]

Starting Mid-April 2014 pro-Russian separatists captured several towns in Donetsk Oblast;[2][3] including Komsomolske.[4] On 29 August 2014, Ukrainian forces reportedly secured the city from the pro-Russian separatists.[4] But on 31 August, it was recaptured by the separatists.[5]
