Notes
- The NCAA formally brands championships open to teams from more than one division as "National Collegiate" championships. Men's hockey is an exception to this rule because the NCAA had once sponsored a separate Division II championship in that sport.
- UAH has notified the WCHA of its intent to leave the league after its 2020–21 season. It has yet to determine a conference affiliation beyond that time.
- Alaska's Fairbanks campus is the only WCHA men's member that has so far not announced plans to leave that league.
- Alaska Anchorage will drop men's ice hockey after the 2020–21 season.
- While Arizona State remains independent, it is playing the 2020–21 season in a scheduling alliance with the Big Ten Conference.[1]
- Although LIU will play its first season of men's hockey in 2020–21 as an independent, it will be in a scheduling alliance with Atlantic Hockey.[2]
- Merrimack began a transition from NCAA Division II to Division I in 2019. Because the NCAA does not sponsor a D-II ice hockey championship, Merrimack remains eligible for Division I postseason competition in that sport.
- ^A The NCAA began sponsoring ice hockey in the 1947–48 season. All teams before 1956, and those classified in the 'University Division' from 1956–1972 are retroactively considered Division I.
- ^B UAH also competed in Division I from 1987–1992.
- ^C UAH won Division II National Championships in 1996 and 1998.
- ^D Bemidji State also competed in Division I from 1947–1950 and 1959–1967.
- ^E Bemidji State won Division II National Championships in 1984, 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1997, and a Division III Championship in 1986.
- ^F UMass also competed in Division I from 1947–1961.
- ^G UMass Lowell won Division II National Championships in 1979, 1981, and 1982.
- ^H Merrimack won a Division II National Championship in 1978.
- ^I Minnesota State won a Division II National Championship in 1980.
- ^J RIT won a Division II National Championship in 1983 and a Division III Championship in 1985.
- ^K Union also competed in Division I from 1947–1949.

- The NCAA announced in July 2020 that St. Thomas could directly transition from Division III to Division I on the four-year schedule normally used for all-sports moves from D-II to D-I.[5] Because the NCAA does not have a Division II championship in men's or women's ice hockey, the exact timing of postseason eligibility for St. Thomas hockey is not certain, but in any event will not occur until at least 2024–25. (Transitions from D-III to D-II require three years instead of four.)
- Lindenwood announced in February 2021 its transfer of the Lions men's hockey team from the American Collegiate Hockey Association's Central States Collegiate Hockey League after the 2021–22 season.[6]
Women
Notes
- The NCAA began sponsoring women's hockey in the 2000–01 season.

- The NCAA announced in July 2020 that St. Thomas could directly transition from Division III to Division I on the four-year schedule normally used for all-sports moves from D-II to D-I. Because the NCAA does not have a Division II championship in men's or women's ice hockey, the exact timing of postseason eligibility for St. Thomas hockey is not certain, but in any event will not occur until at least 2024–25.
