Beyoncé is an American singer, songwriter, dancer and actress. As a prominent figure within popular culture during the early 21st century, Beyoncé's contributions to music through recorded releases and live performances established her as a culturally influential icon.[1] Clive Davis referred to her as the "First Lady of Music".[2] She is cited by Time magazine as a pop icon.[3][4]

Background and Influences

Beyoncé names Michael Jackson as her major musical influence.[5] Aged five, Beyoncé attended her first ever concert where Jackson performed and she claims to have realized her purpose.[6] When she presented him with a tribute award at the World Music Awards in 2006, Beyoncé said, "if it wasn't for Michael Jackson, I would never ever have performed."[7] She admires Diana Ross as an "all-around entertainer".[8] Beyoncé was heavily influenced by Tina Turner, who she said "Tina Turner is someone that I admire, because she made her strength feminine and sexy".[9] and Whitney Houston, who she said "inspired me to get up there and do what she did."[10] She credits Mariah Carey's singing and her song "Vision of Love" as influencing her to begin practicing vocal runs as a child.[11][12] Her other musical influences include Prince,[13] Lauryn Hill,[8] Sade Adu,[14] Donna Summer,[15] Mary J. Blige,[16] Anita Baker, Madonna[17] and Rachelle Ferrell.[8]
