List of churches in Norwich

The following is a list of churches in the district of Norwich. The district does not include several of the outlying suburbs.

The ancient medieval city of Norwich within the walls at one time had 57 parish churches, the largest collection of urban medieval buildings in any one city north of the Alps.[1] Ten are still in use by the Church of England, while many are in use for other purposes.

Active churches

The district has an estimated 73 active churches for 141,800 inhabitants, a ratio of one church to every 1,942 people.

St Gregory, Pottergate Pope Gregory I Medieval 1971 Church of England NHCT. Currently being rented as an antiques centre, run by the same people that run the All Saints Antiques Centre[71]
St James the Less, Pockthorpe James the Less Medieval 1972 Church of England NHCT. Home to Norwich Puppet Theatre since 1980[72]
St John the Theologian, Norwich John the Evangelist Medieval 1984 Church of England NHCT. AKA John de Sepulchre. Currently in use as a wedding and ceremonies venue run by The Flint Rooms[73]

St Martin at Palace Plain, Norwich Martin of Tours Medieval 1971 Church of England NHCT. This is Norwich Historic Churches Trust's base of operations. It includes a visitors' centre as well as the Trust's administrative offices
St Mary, Coslany Mary Medieval 1971 Church of England NHCT. In use by a publishing service and an internet book-seller[77]
St Mary the Less, Norwich Mary Medieval 1544 Church of England Used by a variety of denominations ever since[78]

St Michael at Plea, Norwich Michael Medieval 1971 Church of England NHCT. Currently rent to Revelation, a Christian bookshop. It also has a cafe/tearoom and hosts a range of talks and events[81]
St Michael at Thorn, Norwich Michael Medieval 1942 Church of England Damaged by bombing 1942 and demolished during the 1950s.[82]

St Saviour, Norwich Jesus Medieval 1970s Church of England NHCT. Now it is the Thalia Theatre Company, an educational arts related learning provider for disabled people with a focus on physical and sensory impairments and learning difficulties[90]
SS Simon & Jude, Norwich Simon & Jude Medieval 1892 Church of England NHCT. Taken over by Curious Directive in 2018, it is used as a shared workspace for freelancers working in creative industries[91]
St Swithin, Norwich Swithun Medieval 1951 Church of England NHCT. It is home to Norwich Arts Centre, a successful and well-known venue since 1980[92]
