List of synagogues in Hungary

This List of synagogues in Hungary contains active, otherwise used and destroyed synagogues in Hungary.

The so-called New Synagogue of Szeged monumental building in Szeged (built in 1900–1902)
Another synagogue: the synagogue of Eger (built in 1911–1913). It was also a colossal work of its time, but it was demolished in 1967, so only a few black and white photographs testify to its existence.

At the beginning of the 20th century, there were several synagogues in Hungary. Most of them had extremely artistic exterior and interior designs. There were many classicists, many romantic, many eclectic, and some Art Nouveau style. Several of them were designed to be monumental in size to show the greatness and richness of Judaism – similar to contemporary Christian churches.

However, during World War II, several synagogues were destroyed or significantly damaged. Much was demolished immediately after World War II. Many buildings could not be supported by Hungarian Jewry, which was reduced in number due to the Holocaust, and were sold by local governments in the 1950s and 1960s. These bodies were renovated for more of their cultural purposes - but there was one that was used as a warehouse without any preservation. Some were transformed into shops – and unfortunately some were dismantled as well. Examples of the latter include the huge Eger Synagogue, the Makó Neolog Synagogue and the Salgótarján Synagogue. The memory of the destroyed synagogues is now preserved only by photographs and postcards.

The list of Hungarian synagogues is not necessarily complete, as only a negligible number of sources testify to the existence of some synagogues. (The Hungarian Jewish Lexicon [hu: Magyar zsidó lexikon, ed. Péter Ujvári, Budapest, 1929] lists many settlements in Hungary where a synagogue existed at the time of publishing the book.)
