The locality was initially called Mount Moffatt, but changed to Mount Moffatt on 18 October 2002. It is presumably named after the mountain Mount Moffatt (1,097 metres (3,599 ft)) within the locality (25.0572°S 148.0444°E / -25.0572; 148.0444 (Mount Moffatt (Maranoa Region))).[2][4]
