History

The museum was first established in 1855,[4] but demolished in 1874 to lay foundation for a new building, during the reign of Ayilyam Thirunal.[5] The new building was named after Lord Napier, the Governor of Madras from 1866-1872. The museum was designed by Robert Chisholm, the consulting Architect of the Madras Government, and the construction was completed in 1880. Napier Museum is a landmark in the city with its unique ornamentation and architectural style with gothic roof and minarets. The Indo-Saracenic structure also boasts a natural air conditioning system.

Kerala's rich cultural heritage is in full display here. The museum was named after the former Madras Governor General, John Napier. Also known as Government Art Museum, the architectural style of museum is a mix of Indian, Chinese, Kerala and Mughal Schools of Architecture
