Nilsagar Express

Nilsagar Express (Bengali: নীলসাগর এক্সপ্রেস) is an inter-city passenger train of Bangladesh that runs between Kamalapur railway station of Dhaka District and Chilahati railway station of Nilphamari District.[1] The train was inaugurated on 1 December 2007 to run up to Saidpur railway station of Nilphamari District instead of Chilahati, due to defects in Saidpur–Chilahati railway track and lack of required infrastructure in Chilahati.[2] On 28 January 2015, the route of the train was extended up to Chilahati after major repairing works of that track and nine stations and construction of a wash-pit.[3]

On 24 January 2017, railway coaches of Nilsagar Express were replaced by 12 newer one capable of carrying 852 passengers.[4]

On 27 December 2019, Indian-made LHB coaches of Nilsagar Express and Indonesian-made coaches of Banalata Express were interchanged.[5] From then, Nilsagar Express ran on twelve Indonesian coaches. On 2 January 2020, an extra coach was added to the train.[6] The newer Indonesian-made coaches have bio-toilet system, recliner chair, Wi-Fi-facility and LED display containing information about station and journey.[5]

Accidents
  • 07/11/2020: At around 04:30 am, Dhaka-bound Nilsagar Express collided with a bus stuck on Sonakhali level crossing in Kaliakair Upazila of Gazipur District. The bus got stuck with the locomotive of the train and was dragged around one or half of kilometer. 2 died and at least 5 were injured due to this accident.[7][8][9]
