Publication history of Marvel Comics crossover events

Throughout its history of publication, Marvel Comics has produced many crossover stories combining characters from different series of comics. The following is a list of crossover events involving superheroes and characters from different series.

Key:

  • Bold: "Event" (main story starts and ends in core limited series and side stories runs in multiple books)
  • Italics: "Crossover" (main story can start or end with bookends and continue in multiple books or main story starts and ends in multiple books and side stories run in single or multiple books)
  • Normal: "Limited Series" (main story starts and ends in single limited issue book)
  • Normal: "Story Arc" (main story starts and ends in a single ongoing book)

Line-wide events

Secret Wars was the first modern Marvel event where a separate limited series was launched and then all other tie-ins followed from that. Secret Wars II got a large amount of media attention, and after that, Marvel started having annual crossovers events where a mini-series was launched for the event and it impacted most Marvel comic books.

1990s

The Infinity Trilogy is a three-event arc about the Infinity Stones, six powerful artifacts that imbue its wearer with god-like powers. Part 2 (Infinity War) and Part 3 (Infinity Crusade) deal with the fallout of the Infinity Gauntlet: the creation of separate parts of cosmic hero Adam Warlock, Goddess and Magus.

Civil War May 2006–February 2007 Event Heroes are divided when the U.S. government passes the Super-human Registration Act. Captain America seeks freedom, while Iron Man seeks to institute the 50 State Initiative.[4] Major events in the saga include Peter Parker's revealing his identity to the public (Civil War #2, August 2006)[4] and Captain America's death (Captain America #25, 2007).[5] Leads to a number of new launches.
  • Initiative: With Captain America dead, the world moves on under a single united team, the Fifty States Initiative. Unfortunately, Luke Cage leads a renegade team of Avengers against Iron Man while Norman Osborn and the Skrulls lurk under the surface of Iron Man's new order.   • Dark Reign: The world of heroes is in its darkest period. Norman Osborn is now the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., rebranded H.A.M.M.E.R. and formed his own dark cabal with Emma Frost, the Hood, Namor, Doctor Doom, Loki, and the Void to control the world and steal the Avengers name from the team, with the creation of the Dark Avengers. Iron Man faces the consequences of his crimes during Civil War, as he becomes a wanted fugitive and near death. Meanwhile, Hank Pym forms his own team of Avengers to combat Norman Osborn while the Hood assumes control over the Avengers Initiative.

Avengers vs. X-Men March–October 2012 Event Aftermath of the mini series Avengers: X-Sanction, which brings back Cable to the Marvel Universe ahead of the Phoenix Force which has been discovered heading directly for Earth. Secret Wars May 2015–January 2016 Event Originally running until September 2015 – the series which spins out of the Avengers and New Avengers Time Runs Out storylines, began in May 2015 with an eight issue mini series, was later changed to nine issues (plus a Free Comic Book Day issue #0) and extended to December 2015 but eventually pushed to January 2016. The basic premise involves the collision of the Marvel Universe with the Ultimate Marvel Universe and destroying both. Pieces of the two universes (called domains) are combined with other post collision universes creating the Battleworld where in which the Marvel Universe will be reforged and birthed anew in October 2015. Civil War II May–December 2016 Event Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez team up for a sequel to the popular event by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. 1989 Crossover By the time the dinosaurs rolled up, Set started feeding off their life energies as they violently tore each other apart. Gaea decided to let the dinosaurs die so that mammals – the creatures with the most potential – could live. From his other dimensional plane, Set encouraged the dinosaurs to purposely attack the mammals until he merged a few together to take physical form once more upon the Earth.
The disembodied Ghaur baits Silver Surfer into restoring his physical form by hijacking Surfer's surfboard. After a brief battle, Ghaur escapes and flees to Earth, where he convinces Lemuria's ruler, Llyra, to form an alliance to summon Set back to Earth.

As X-Men popularity grew in 80s, so Marvel started doing crossovers between X-Men books usually dubbed X-Overs. In the 1990s the frequency of crossovers increased as X-Men popularity exploded and this trend of having annual crossovers became more common.

A POISON!: Monsters from another reality manipulate Kid Kaiju's abilities from across dimensions and force him to summon an alternate Fin Fang Foom to the Savage Land, who easily fights his way past Kid Kaiju's monsters: Mekara, Aegis, Hi-Vo, Slizzik, and Scragg, as Kid Kaiju is doubtful of their abilities. Choosing instead to fight fire with fire, or Foom with Foom, the Prime Fin Fang Foom is summoned to fight off the Poison Fin Fang Foom. Prime Foom is unable to defeat Poison Foom alone, but uses a psychic link to inspire Kei, and by extension his monsters, to ultimately defeat the Poison, killing him.
