Ritesh Arya

Ritesh Arya is an Indian geologist known for finding water at multiple locations in the high-altitude cold and mountainous desert of eastern Ladakh, including the Siachen Glacier, which has made him a Guinness World Records holder. Since 2014 he has been the Director Water and Geothermal Section at the International Sustainable Energy Organization (ISEO).[1][2][3]

Life

Ritesh Arya did his education from the Center of Advanced Study in Geology, Panjab University. In 1997 he left his government job and established his own company 'Arya Driller' in 1996 working on a "No Water, No Money" basis.[1][4]

In 1995, following a request from the Dalai Lama to help in providing water to Choglamsar, Arya drilled the highest bore well in the world in the area, successfully providing water to Choglamsar.[5][4]

In 1997 Water Aid was funding a project to find drinking water for around 5000 Tibetans living in and around Leh. This included Choglamsar, Spituk, Nyoma, Sumdo and Hanle. Arya was part of the team who managed to find the required water, further drilling 25 borewells to make that water accessible.[4]

Arya then helped make drinking water available at military bases and along the border across Ladakh including Thoise, Phobrang, Chushul, Partapur, Sasoma, Rezang La and Tangtse.[4][6] Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Batalik and DRDO laboratory aside, Arya found water at nearly 500 locations connected to the Indian Army's XIV Corps.[4]

He broke his own record for digging the highest borewell in 2003 and again in 2006. This feat in 2006 put him in the Guinness World Records for exploring and drilling the highest artesian condition (borewell) in the world at Siachen Glacier for the Indian Army.[1][4]
