Sembaruthi (transl. Hibiscus) is an Indian Tamil-language drama airing on Zee Tamil and streams on ZEE5. It premiered on 16 October 2017.[1] The show stars Shabana Shajahan, Karthik Raj and Priya Raman. In December 2020, VJ Agni replaced Karthik.

The story is about Parvathi, who comes from the village and joint as maid in 'Aadhikadavur' Akhilandeshwari (Akhila), a rich and a wealthy lady's house. But situation turns when Parvathi falls in love with Akhila's son Adhitya and they secretly marry. Finally, the marriage known by Akhila and she hates Parvathi. Then Adhi and Parvathi leaves the house and they started a new life in a rented house. Now the track moves will Adhi and Parvathi be accepted and invited by Akhilandeshwari.

Plot

A rich and high-class woman "Aadhikadavur" Akhilandeshwari, where her son Adhitya falls in love with Parvathi, after the death of her grandmother, she decides to work as a maid at Akhilandeshwari's house. Meanwhile, Akhilandeshwari is a strong-willed, stubborn lady who wants perfection in everything. The major u-turn comes, when Adhitya marries Parvathi without his mother knowledge. Parvathi's father Sundaram was Akhilandeshwari's family's driver for 21 years. Where he is very loyal to Akhilandeshwari, he is unaware of Parvathi's love with Adhitya. On the other side, they secretly get married where this marriage knows by only Adhitya's father Purshothaman, Aadhitya's brother Arun and Arun's wife Aishwariya also Akhilandeshwari's father (through the god blesses) supports this marital relation. While this three of them also hides the truth from Akhilandeshwari. Adhitya and Parvathi face turmoils in their marital love life due to the evil woman Vanaja, who is the sister of Akhilandeshwari.

Vanaja is an evil and cunning women, where she plans many times to split up the family and bring shame to Akhilandeshwari. But again and again, Parvathi turns savior to Akhilandeshwari and her family's dignity. But in the couple's passionate love story, who stands out to be the biggest enemy is Adhitya's ex-fiancée Nandhini. Earlier, when Adhitya gets engaged to Nandhini, soon Akhilandeshwari breaks the wedding by finding Nandhini's evil truth also she is belongs to Nagapuri Vamsam. So Nandhini seeks revenge on Akhilandeshwari by collaborating Vanaja to ruin Akhilandeshwari and family. Will Adhitya and Parvathi come against these crafty villains, stay strong to fight back for their love and win Akhilandeshwari's blessings forms rest of the story.

  • Shabana Shajahan as Parvathi Adhitya: A young and beautiful village girl, who is employed by Akhilandeshwari as her home cook. She is the eldest daughter-in-law of Akiladeshwari and Purshothaman. The daughter of Sundharam and the elder sister of Ganesh. She is dutiful, beautiful and naive but she also strong-willed at times. She saved Akhilandeshwari's family many times in many ways.   • Karthik Raj (2017–2020) as Adhi ("Aadhikadavur" Adhitya Purshothaman):[2] The elder son of Akhilandeshwari and Purshothaman. Caring and lovable husband of Parvathi, elder brother of Arun. He is a calm, intelligent and serious individual who is in love with Parvathi and eventually marries her, without his mother Akhilandeshwari's knowledge. Now he and Parvathi live alone in a house for rent.

  • Priya Raman as "Aadhikadavur" Akhilandeshwari (Akhila Purshothaman):[3] A rich, strong-willed and stubborn woman, Akhilandeshwari expects perfection in everything. She is the mother of Adhi and Arun, and mother-in-law of Aishwarya and Parvathi, wife of Purshothaman and co-sister of Vanaja. She is the de facto head of the house. Initially she cares Parvathi as a maid but she is unaware of her son's love and eventual marriage to Parvathi. Although stubborn, she is occasionally caring and is good at heart.   • Oorvambu Lakshmi as Vanaja: She is co-sister of Akilandeshwari. She is evil, cunning and always crafts plans to split the family and ruin Parvathi's reputation. She is the main villain who is waiting to overtake Akhila's position and loot the wealth. Also she wants to take revenge against Akhiladeshwari, Purushothaman, Adhi, Arun, Aishwarya and Parvathi.   • Sanjay Kumar Asrani as Purshothaman: Akhilandeshwari's husband. Father of Adhi and Arun, father-in-law of Aishwarya and Parvathi. He is calm and patient, unlike his wife. He approves of Adhi's marriage to Parvathi. (2017–present)
  • Janani Ashok Kumar (2017–2020) as Aishwarya Arun: Arun's wife and youngest daughter-in-law of Akhilandeshwari and Purshothaman. She is a weak-minded; initially hostile to Parvathi before her marriage to Arun, then starts caring for her and empathizing her. She is now aware of Parvathi and Adhi's marriage and she supports them.

  • VJ Kathir as Arun ("Aadhikadavur" Arun Purushothaman): The enthusiastic younger son of Akhilandeshwari and Purshothaman and caring and lovable husband of Aishwarya, Adhi's younger brother, Parvathi's brother-in-law. He is a lively man who is in support of his brother's love. At initial stage Arun was a playboy but, Arun is married to Aishwarya, whom he despised initially. Now they are closer in life. Reception

The show became the first Tamil non Sun TV show to top the TRP charts maintaining its position in top the 5 until COVID-19 break in April 2020.[6] It also maintained its No. 1 position in Tamil Nadu for 24 weeks (from Barc Week 46,2018 to Week 21,2019 except on Week 49 '18,Week 3 '19, Week 13 '19 & Week 18 '19).[7][8]

In the week ending 28 December 2018, it became the most watched Tamil television program for the first time, garnering 10.79 million impressions.[9]

Special events
  • On 11 February 2019, Sembaruthi held a wedding episode called Sembaruthi Kalyanam for Adhi and Parvarthi's marriage, which aired non-stop three hours on Sunday.[10]
  • On 11 August 2019, Zee Tamil held a grand event Sembaruthi Oru Sathanaipayanam with all the cast and crew to celebrate the success of the series.[7]

Versions in other languages

The series concept was taken from Zee Telugu series Muddha Mandaram, aired from 2014 to 2019 and it was remade in Malayalam and Kannada languages.[11]

COVID-19 outbreak in India

Due to COVID-19 pandemic situation, Sembaruthi and other serials have stopped from 28 March 2020. Months later, TV Serial shooting was permitted on India. So from 27 July 2020, Zee Tamil serials resumed with fresh episodes.[13]

International broadcast

The Series was released on 16 October 2017 on Zee Tamil and Zee Tamil HD. The show was also broadcast internationally on channel's international distribution.
