Internal selection

Max Jason Mai was the selected performer.

On 8 October 2011, RTVS head of programmes Andrej Miklánek announced that they would not participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012, citing budgetary constraints and plans to instead focus on other shows.[3][4] However, two days later, RTVS released an official communiqué stating that their participation was yet to be decided.[5] On 16 November 2011, RTVS confirmed that they had internally selected Miro Šmajda to be the Slovak artist in Baku.[6] Two days later, Šmajda's management claimed RTVS's confirmation to participate was "misunderstood". After this, rumours about Slovakia's non-participation grew until 20 December 2011, when Slovakia's participation was officially confirmed by RTVS.[7] It was announced that the artist and song would be presented at a press conference on 1 March 2012,[8] though the press conference was eventually postponed to 7 March 2012.[9] At the press conference, Miro Šmajda, under the stage name Max Jason Mai, was officially presented as the Slovakian entry for Baku. Šmajda had previously finished in second place in the Czech and Slovak casting show SuperStar in 2009 and subsequently released his debut album Čo sa týka lásky in 2010.[10] He performed the song Don't Close Your Eyes.[11][12]
