Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012

Ireland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku. Ireland chose their entry for the contest on 24 February 2012, through the national selection programme Eurosong 2012, organised by the national broadcaster RTÉ. Pop duo Jedward won the competition, with their song "Waterline", making them the first act ever to represent Ireland two years in a row. In the final, Ireland scored 46 points and ranked 19th.

Before Eurovision

Eurosong 2012

Eurosong 2012 was the national final format developed by RTÉ in order to select Ireland's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012. The competition was broadcast as a special edition of The Late Late Show held on 24 February 2012 and hosted by Ryan Tubridy. The competition was broadcast on RTÉ One as well as online at the RTÉ website and the official Eurovision Song Contest website eurovision.tv.

Format

Five music professionals each selected one entry for the competition.[1] A combination of regional jury voting and public televoting determined the winner.

The five mentors responsible for each selecting a song and artist for the competition were revealed on 3 November 2011.[2] The mentors were:

The five finalists were revealed on 8 February 2012. Among the finalists were Irish 2005 and 2011 Eurovision contestants Donna McCaul and Jedward.[3][4] The five songs were presented on 9 February 2012 during the RTÉ Radio 1 programme Mooney.[5]

Final

The national final featured commentary from a panel that consisted of former contest winner Niamh Kavanagh and RTÉ One Eurovision commentator Marty Whelan. Guest performer was Brotherhood of Man performing "Save Your Kisses for Me". After the combination of votes from the five regional juries and the public televoting, "Waterline" performed by Jedward was selected as the winner.[6][7]

At Eurovision

During the Semi-Final Allocation draw which was held on 25 January 2012, it was announced Ireland was scheduled to compete on the second half of the first semi-final on 22 May.[8] On 20 March 2012 the Running Order draw was held, which determined the order of which the participants performed. Ireland performed 18th, the last of the first semi-final, having been given the chance to choose their position after winning a wildcard in the draw.[9] After performing at the first semi-final on 22 May, Jedward made it to the top ten and qualified for the final on Saturday 26 May; they performed in the 23rd position and won 46 points, giving them a rank of 19th in the competition.
