Vinayak Pandurang Karmarkar

Vinayak Pandurang Karmarkar (1891–1967) was an Indian artist, famous for his sculptures. [1]

He is best known for his statues of Shivaji. [2]

A museum has been set up at his house in Sasavne village near Alibag. His father was a farmer. In the village of Sasavane a Shilpalaya is in the name of Vinayak. he was fond of making sculptures right from his childhood. At that time Otto rothfield was the district collector of Sasavane. He admitted Vinayak to J J college in Mumbai. Then Karmarkar acquired the first rank there. He undertook a study tour several times. The most famous among his other sculptures are 'Shankha-Dhwani', 'Matsya-kanya' and 'Humjoli'. His style was realistic[3]

He is a winner of 1964 Padma Shri Award. [4]
