WPXK-TV

WPXK-TV, virtual channel 54 (UHF digital channel 18), is an Ion Television owned-and-operated station serving Knoxville, Tennessee, United States that is licensed to the town of Jellico near the Kentucky state line. The station is owned by the Ion Media Networks subsidiary of the E. W. Scripps Company. WPXK-TV's studios are located on Executive Park Drive (near I-40/I-75) in west Knoxville, and its transmitter is located on Sharp's Ridge in North Knoxville, on a tower shared with ABC affiliate WATE-TV (channel 6). WPXK-TV's facilities also serve as the main studio for Federal Communications Commission (FCC) purposes for sister station WUPX-TV in Lexington, Kentucky.[2]

Analog-to-digital conversion

WPXK-TV shut down its analog signal, over UHF channel 54, on June 12, 2009, the official date in which full-power television stations in the United States transitioned from analog to digital broadcasts under federal mandate. The station's digital signal remained on its pre-transition UHF channel 23.[4] Through the use of PSIP, digital television receivers display the station's virtual channel as its former UHF analog channel 54, which was among the high band UHF channels (52-69) that were removed from broadcasting use as a result of the transition.
