Etymology

The name of the village (meaning "Property of the Khan") can be traced back to the ownership of land in the area by Mehrali bey Sarijali-Javanshir, son of Panah Ali Khan, an 18th-century ruler of the Karabakh Khanate.[1]

History

During the years of the Russian Empire, the village was part of the Dzhebrail Uyezd of the Elisabethpol Governorate. An 1886 statistical yearbook cites the village as consisting of 148 households with a population of 648 Tatar (Azerbaijani) individuals who were listed as Sunni by religion and farmers by occupation.[2]

The village was located in the Armenian-occupied territories surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, coming under the control of ethnic Armenian forces in October 1993 during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War in the early 1990s.

The village subsequently became part of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh as part of its Kashatagh Province, from 1998 referred to as Ishkanadzor (Armenian: Իշխանաձոր). In 2006 the village completed the construction of Ishkanadzor Clinic with financial backing from the Tufenkian Foundation,[3] while in 2014, it was reported that 34 additional homes had been built in the village using funds from the Artsakh Lottery.[4] The village has served as a hub for 16 other smaller settlements in the surrounding areas.[5]

It was recaptured by Azerbaijan on 26 October 2020 during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war.[6][7][8]
