2021 Liverpool City Council election

The 2021 Liverpool City Council election is due to take place on 6 May 2021 to elect members of Liverpool City Council, alongside other elections across the United Kingdom. One third of the council are up for election, as well as the Mayor of Liverpool, the Metro Mayor of Liverpool City Region and Police and Crime Commissioner Merseyside Police, all covering Liverpool.

Background

In December 2019, Mayor Joe Anderson was arrested on suspicion of bribery and witness intimidation, he said he would not seek re-election.[1] Deputy Mayor Wendy Simon became interim mayor. Eight candidates are standing to be the Labour candidate for mayor and the result of the internal selection will be announced 5 March.[2][3] A referendum in Liverpool will be held in 2023 on the continuation of the mayoralty.[4]
