Find U Again

"Find U Again" is a song by English record producer Mark Ronson featuring Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello. The synth-pop and disco-pop track was released on 30 May 2019, as the fourth single from Ronson's fifth studio album Late Night Feelings. The lyrics are about losing a person that is never seen again. Some lyrics were written and kept by Cabello when she was 16 years old. The song received generally positive reviews from music critics, who praised Ronson's production and Cabello's vocal delivery. It peaked at number one on the US Dance Club Songs chart after several remixes were made. The music video was directed by Bradley & Pablo and has been compared to 2003 martial arts film Kill Bill and the western film genre.

Background

On 11 February 2019, Mark Ronson, Camila Cabello and songwriter Ilsey Juber shared a picture from a recording studio and hinted at a possible collaboration.[1] Regarding the backstory of the song, Ronson wrote:

Two years ago, when I was working with Kevin Parker and we were doing some DJ dates, we were messing around with some ideas, and he had this melodic idea and these chords. When we really didn't get to finish our stuff, because he was going back to Perth and starting the Tame Impala record, I asked him, 'Can I finish that song and use it for my record?' It's such a great, strong idea that I'm not gonna waste it until I really have the perfect person whose voice is just gonna cut through, and it's gonna be the right person to write the lyrics—Camila Cabello. She's such a huge pop star, I sometimes just think like, 'Oh, those people aren't gonna want to f**k with me.' Then I sent her the track and she loved it. She came in and she wrote it. I was just really in awe of how serious she takes the stuff, each take. A lot of pop music, people sing the chorus once and they just fly it over three times.

Ronson decided to include Cabello on the song after hearing her 2017 song "Never Be the Same" on the radio, stating that it "cuts so hard, but she delivers a lot of emotion".[2] She immediately accepted when he texted her about the concept of his album Late Night Feelings, particularly about the theme of heartbreak.[3] During the recording session, Cabello wrote her own lyrics to the song's chorus and second verse, some of which were kept from when she was 16 years old.[2][4][5] Ronson was especially surprised by how fast she wrote the lyrics, as both Parker and Ronson were unable to find artists who were capable of incorporating their vocals on the former's melody.[3] Prior to the song's release, Cabello posted a video of her singing it on Instagram on 12 April 2019.[6] "Find U Again" was sent to streaming services and made available for digital download on 30 May 2019.[7][8][9]

Composition

"Find U Again" is a synth-pop and disco-pop song,[10][11] using a 1980s synthesizer and Auto-Tuned vocals.[12][13][14] It was written by Ronson, Parker, Cabello, and Juber, and produced by the former two.[15] The song is based on 4
4
common time
, the tempo is 104 BPM and is played in the key of A major.[16] According to the sheet music published at Musicnotes.com by BMG Rights Management, Cabello's vocal range spans from the low note of B3 to the high note of C5.[17] Her vocodered vocals on the middle eight and second verse were compared to Taylor Swift's 2018 song "Delicate".[18][19] Perfect couplets are used in the lyric "this crush is kind-of crushing me / I do therapy at least twice a week", as she modulates her voice when she sings "tears in your eyes" after transitioning from a falsetto during each verse.[20] Cabello sings about losing a person that she would never see again on an experimental sonic track compared to 1960s bedroom songs by Lesley Gore and The Shangri-Las.[21]

Critical reception

"Find U Again" received generally positive reviews from music critics. Kat Bein from Billboard described it as a "a sugary-sweet, vocoded crush song",[9] while Variety critic Jem Aswad stated that it was "the most pop-friendly track" on Ronson's album.[18] Brittany Spanos from Rolling Stone praised Ronson's light and fresh production which "never overshadows Cabello's effectively minimalistic delivery" and acknowledged that she has the "innate ability to add that extra, inexplicably something to anything she touches".[19] Shaad D'Souza of The Fader noted that the song displayed an emotional intensity of breakup sadness despite containing lyrical clichés and generic phrases, praising Cabello's lyrical depth in the track that was disguised as "wide-reaching simplicity".[20]

Chart performance

"Find U Again" peaked at number one on the US Dance Club Songs chart on the 19 October 2019 issue of Billboard after the song was remixed by MK, Robert Eibach and The Scene Kings.[22]

Music video

Camila Cabello is seen wearing a platinum blonde wig as the video's plot is compared to Kill Bill and the western film genre.[23][24]

Background

Throughout the week preceding the music video's release, Ronson teased the video on his social media accounts, which was officially announced on 8 July 2019.[25] It was released the next day from his YouTube channel.[26] Elements of the video showing Ronson and the other bounty hunters were shot in grayscale, while Cabello's performance was shot with a saturated blue tint.[27] Cabello decided to change her appearance for the video, eventually settling for a platinum, shoulder length wig after several fittings.[28] The video was directed by Bradley & Pablo, and filmed in Los Angeles.[27][29]

As of December 2019, the music video has over 11 million views on YouTube.[26]

Synopsis

A bounty hunter by the name of 'The Duke' is offered a bounty on the head of Camila Cabello, who accepts and begins to track her down. Mark Ronson also finds the bounty and races off, competing against other bounty hunters in the process. Cabello is disguised as a cabaret performer at Club Heartbreak, wearing a blonde wig and rhinestone-encrusted sequined bodysuit, and performs alongside two other back-up dancers. Ronson is the first person to arrive at the location, but decides to watch her performance instead. He ends up saving her as the club is raided by various bounty hunters, who tear the place apart and eventually realise that they were too late. The video ends with the two in Ronson's convertible as the singer rips off her wig, revealing her natural brunette hair.[23][24]

Reception

Writing for Billboard, Kirsten Spruch stated that the music video's retro and vintage atmosphere matched Ronson's production, reminding her of old western films.[23] Brittany Spanos of Rolling Stone compared the video to 2003 martial arts film Kill Bill,[24] while Israel Daramola of Spin thought that the video was complete with a car chase and the evocative presence of people.[29]

Other cover versions

Mabel performed a cover of the song on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, which was uploaded to the official Vevo channel of BBC Radio 1 on 7 August 2019.[30]
