Kiyo in Kyoto: From the Maiko House (Japanese: 舞妓さんちのまかないさん, Hepburn: Maiko-san chi no Makanai-san, lit. "Makanai in the Maiko Lodge")[lower-alpha 1] is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Aiko Koyama. It has been serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday magazine since December 2016, with its chapters collected in fifteen tankōbon volumes as of November 2020.

An anime television series adaptation by J.C.Staff is scheduled to premiere worldwide in February 2021 on NHK World-Japan, followed by a Japanese broadcast on NHK Educational TV in fall of the same year.

As of March 2020, the manga had 1 million copies in circulation. In 2020, the manga won the 65th Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen category.

Story

The story is set in Kyoto's hanamachi geisha quarter. Here, after geisha finish their work late at night, they rest at the lodge to prepare for the next day. The story centers on Kiyo, a teenager Aomori native who works as a cook in the geisha lodge. She also has a friend named Sumire. who is a maiko (apprentice geisha).

Manga

Kiyo in Kyoto: From the Maiko House is written and illustrated by Aiko Koyama. The series began in the combined 5th-6th issue of Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday, published on December 28, 2016.[5] Shogakukan has collected its chapters into individual tankōbon volumes. The first volume was released on April 12, 2017.[6] As of November 12, 2020, fifteen volumes have been released.[7]

The manga has been licensed by Elex Media Komputindo in Indonesia.[8]

Anime

In March 2020, NHK announced that the series would be adapted into an anime television series.[1] The series is animated by J.C.Staff, and directed by Youhei Suzuki, with Susumu Yamakawa overseeing scripts, and Go Sakabe composing the series' music. It will first premiere worldwide on the NHK World-Japan channel on February 25, 2021, followed by a Japanese broadcast on NHK Educational TV in the fall of the same year. The series will run for 12 episodes.[4][22]

Reception

As of October 2019, the manga had 700,000 copies in circulation.[23] As of March 2020, it had over 1 million copies in circulation.[20] In 2020, the manga won the 65th Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen category.[24][25][26]
