Larry Sng

Larry Sng Wei Shien (simplified Chinese: 孙伟瑄; traditional Chinese: 孫偉瑄; pinyin: Sūn Wěixuān), is a Malaysian politician. He is currently the Member of Parliament (MP) of Julau since 2018.[1]

In this Chinese name, the family name is Sng (孙).

Larry is a member and the Sarawak's chief of People's Justice Party (PKR) in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition.[2]

Personal life and education

Larry was born on 14 September 1979 to Sarawakian multi-millionaire businessman-politician Sng Chee Hua and wife Taiwanese-born Susan Sng.[3] His father is the former one-term Julau MP from 1995 to 1999, two-term Pelagus assemblyman from 1991 to 2001 and a renowned corporate player. His grandfather is Kapitan China Sng Joo in Kapit in the mid-80s.[4]

Larry, a graduate of London School of Economics (LSE) was 27 age when he married May Ting, age 29, a political science and economics graduate from the National University of Singapore (NUS) as well as a Masters graduate in commerce from an Australian university on 14 October 2006.[5] May is the eldest daughter of well-known Sarawak business magnate, Ting Pek Khiing and wife Chai Yu Lan.[6]

Larry is known to be running the Larry Sng Education Fund which had already given out more than RM1 million that benefited many deserving students from Pelagus and Bukit Goram studying in various higher learning institutions since.[7] Larry has been touted as the Sarawak's richest MP after he declared that his and his wife’s assets to be around RM11.78 million to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) as reported on its asset declaration portal in November 2018.[8]

Politics career

Larry who was born in the Iban heartland of central Sarawak, joined Sarawak Native People's Party (PBDS) in 2001 when he was 22. He first stood on the PBDS ticket in 2001 state election, replacing his father as the Pelagus representative. He had served two terms as Barisan Nasional (BN) state assemblyman of Sarawak for Pelagus from 2001 to 2011.[9] Under the Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud BN's administration in 2004, he was the Sarawak's youngest assistant minister when appointed the Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Economic Planning) as well as Assistant Minister of Industrial Development (Planning).[4][10]

Then Larry joined the new Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) in 2004 which was founded by Dr James Jemut Masing and his father in the wake of the de-registration of PBDS. In 2006 state election, he retained his Pelagus seat but as the PRS candidate. He had been the PRS deputy secretary general under the presidency of the Land Development Minister, Dr James until a leadership tussle between them causing him being sacked from the party for insubordination in 2007.[4][11] In 2009, he was given the additional portfolio of Assistant Minister of Youth (Training) irrespective of his partyless status. He was somehow dropped from contesting and defending the Pelagus state assembly seat in 2011 state election.[12]

He had also served as the deputy chairman of Sarawak Convention Bureau and Sarawak Convention Centre. He was still appointed Youth Affairs advisor to the state government in 2012. Larry resigned from the post in 2013 to assume the position of founding president of newly formed Sarawak Workers Party (SWP). In the 2013 general election, he contested as SWP candidate in Lubok Antu parliamentary seat but lost.[4] In April 2016, Larry amidst being the party president, unexpectedly resigned from SWP thus cancelling his earlier announced candidacy for the newly created state constituency of Bukit Goram in the forth coming 2016 state election then.[13] He explained he has quits because he felt he could not truly serve the constituents without being in BN in an emotional post on his Facebook.[14]

In the 2018 general election (GE14), Larry had contested as an Independent candidate and was elected to the Parliament of Malaysia for the Julau federal constituency.[15] He won 10,105 of the 18,279 votes cast[15] to defeat the four-term incumbent, PRS deputy president, Joseph Salang Gandum.[16] He joined the PKR shortly after the election.[17] He was elected as the Sarawak chief of PKR in 2020.[2] He had served as chairman of the Malaysian Pepper Board (MPB) under the federal Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities from May 2018 to April 2020 during the PH's rules.[18] On 21 December 2020, he announced that he was stepping down as the State Chairman of PKR of Sarawak and designated a Dayak leader as his successor to him in that position. However, six days later on 27 December 2020, he announced that he would withdraw his decision to resign and stay on in the position after discussions with his party president, Anwar Ibrahim who is the President of PKR.
