Libertarian Party of Idaho

The Libertarian Party of Idaho is the Idaho affiliate of the Libertarian Party. Although it currently has no representation in the Idaho Legislature, it is one of two minor political parties in Idaho which has ballot access. The party promotes securing personal and economic liberties as its top priorities.[1][2] The current state chair is Jennifer Imhoff-Dousharm.[3]

History

The Libertarian Party of Idaho was established by D. Allen Dalton in 1975, when they first announced their run for office.[4] Generally, the Libertarian Party of Idaho has about twelve candidates run in each election cycle.[5]

Party Milestones

  • In November, 2016, US presidential candidate popular vote was 4.1% (28,331 votes) for Gary Johnson, representing the highest percentage achieved for a Libertarian presidential candidate in the state of Idaho.[6]
  • In August, 2020, the Libertarian Party of Idaho elected Jennifer Imhoff-Dousharm as party chair. She is the first chair who is a women; has a Latino background; and has a Pilipino background.[7]
  • In October, 2020, the Libertarian Party of Idaho represented over 1% of registered voters for the first time in party history.[8]

Gun Ownership: The Idaho Libertarian Party believe that every person has the right to arm themselves in self-defense.[10]

Taxes: If Americans want to give money to the government for one reason or another, they should be free to do so. If Americans prefer to spend their money on other things, then they should be free to do that also.

The Economy: The Idaho Libertarian Party believes that all people have the right to freely offer goods and services on the market and that free-market approaches are the most effective at improving people’s lives.

Civil Liberties: The Idaho Libertarian Party believes that the equal rights of all people matter all the time. No exceptions.

Crime and Justice: The Idaho Libertarian Party believes that the existing justice system is seriously flawed.

Foreign Policy: Strive for peace with the world.

Healthcare: The Idaho Libertarian Party believes that healthcare prices would decrease and quality and availability would increase if healthcare was freed from government meddling and control.

War on Drugs: The Idaho Libertarian Party believes that the War on Drugs is ineffective, unfair, and immoral. They advocate ending it.
